I don't care either way--milk or cream, milk before tea or tea and then milk--myself, but always thought it politic to do as the Romans do, when in Rome. I'm sure there must be a good reason this tradition evolved, but I have no idea what it might be.
I stayed in cheap cheap cheap places the three winters I spent there, and don't remember a single bad breakfast, but I never touched the orange marmalade, dining on the toast as it was, just buttered. The toast was usually cold, but I can accept, adapt, and move on. Cold toast never killed anyone, and even today, if the toast is cold, I just think "Oh well," and dine on it anyway.
But orange marmalade with dust and mold on top of it, no way.
