I remember in the 80s, one of my teachers had an "Imagine the World Without War" sticker. I didn't think such a thing was possible.

Knowing more now, I realize it is possible - probably not in our lifetime, but the abolition of slavery was not possible in the 1700s either.

Being 63 years of age, I really have a hard time remembering a time when we haven't been at war. In fact, I am of the opinion that we should change our Department of Defense to Department of Offense since GW Bush was President.

I thought 0bama was going to end all war, what happened?

We could eliminate war tomorrow, if we all just bowed down to every tinpot dictator asshole in the world. There'd never need to be another shot fired.

I'm just not very good at bowing down to tinpot dictator assholes.

Until you can get rid of them, I'll have to keep the war option in my pocket.

As long as there are people who want things that belong to others there will be war. Either war to obtain those things are war to defend ownership of those things.

So, that's why when in a war, you don't pull your punches. Using the atomic bomb was the hardest punch we could throw during WWII, but because we used it, there are still Japanese people, since the Japanese planned total resistance to an invasion, including women and children in mass banzai attacks with spears. There's also about 2M American servicemen who didn't have to die because of the planned invasion of Japan.

One could develop a guessing game about Tav...which substance is he on with any particular post?  We know that 3 martinis in a 20 minute period makes him fly into a rage, one with clear communist undertones.  When he's happy and goofy it's marijuana.  I think this one is heroin. 

Speaking of Taverner, Beck had on his radio show, some soundbites from the OWS in Oakland.  A very pompous Marxist was interviewed; every other word was Boozh-Wah-Zeeee.  I thought of Tavs, and wondered if it was him.

That was the first thing that I thought of when I saw his post.  Slavery still exists in many, many places in the world, and quite simply, eliminating it would likely involve war.  It may not be as obvious as plantations filled with slaves, but it is very visible.  Sweatshop labor, especially as it occurs in China, is barely a step up from slavery. 

I don't know if there is a single day that has passed that some sort of war wasn't occurring somewhere in the world.  Even the DUmmies much vaunted uncorrupted tribes engage in tribal warfare on a regular basis.  America could avoid war, if we were willing to A) ignore every injustice anywhere in the world B) Completely withdraw from international politics and C) be willing to accept mass casualties in American once other countries realize that they can take our resources without us fighting back.

I heard something on the radio yesterday that reminded me of this thread.

In 1932 the Society of International law reported that in the previous 3,421 years  there had only been 268 "peace years." They also said that because of incomplete records it is difficult to determine if those years were completely peaceful.
