So I was looking for info on the Chupadero Massacre in May of 1984... Mexico and Guatemala came THIS CLOSE to an actual hot war. Yes we were mobilized, all kinds of fun.

Yet. it's like it's gone away... there are a few things on the web...

But if an event where two countries ALMOST went to war can be so throughly scrubbed.

Oh and how close did we come to war? The Mexican Army mobilized reserves... (that included us).. and moved units to the border.

The UN scrambled, both Soviet and American ambassadors called the kids to the office... and my hubby was in the navy and they scrambled out of port... oh the ways... and if you have no idea about this... trust me, you are not alone... I am betting that MOST Mexicans don't remember this either.

Why was I looking for that? Memory sake... fiction... what have you . Oh and photos are gone.

Oh, we all remember where we were in May of 1984, when Mexico and Guadelsomething came THIS CLOSE to war.  I was in college.  My roommates and I were visibly shakeny, and needed a stiff drink.   There was to be little or no sleep that night.

Oh that's right, that was Spring Break.

I do remember protracted little old undeclared shooting wars in Salvo and along the Nicaraguan border then, I even got to play a walk-on part in the latter; there was plenty of real combat going on without worrying about mightabeens.

I performed the following search on Google:

I found a wealth of information. The quality of results obtained from Google is largely dependent on the quality of the search terms used. You did not specify what you searched for, so I can't comment. But, the information you're talking about is there and readily available. All you have to do is construct a good search phrase.

It's a mistake to blame Google for the results of an ineffective search phrase.

Edit to add: The Internet is still spotty when it comes to things that were in the news before the Internet existed. That's changing slowly, as more and more news outlets open their archives and make them available. In some cases, though, 20th century pre-Internet events can be difficult to search for. Unless they are the subject of discussion in a time after about 1995, the archives are about the only place you can find information. The earlier an event or situation was in the news, the more careful your search must be. As you discovered, events that happen outside of the United States are even harder. Only by creating a well-constructed search will you find the information you're looking for. Sloppy search terms will get poor results.

I also explained why there isn't more information available on the Internet. That also has nothing to do with you or Google. Google links to web resources, based on what is out there. It does not generate information. It only finds information. If that information doesn't exist, don't blame Google.

I'm sure it is an important thing in the region where it occurred. It may also be important to you, specifically. However, that is not the nature of the Internet. You'll always find the most hits on subjects with the widest interest.

As for your "whatever," you accused me of a personal attack. No such attack was made.

As for missing information where it once was, I suggest you contact the site where that information used to be. Google can't find what has been deleted, you know. That's not what it does. You think there is a conspiracy at work. I think not. This story is an old one, of questionable interest to US internet searchers, and, although it's a pity that you can't find the information you're looking for, I'd imagine no conspiracy is involved.

I did not read any of those links. I'm afraid I have little interest in old incidents involving Mexico and Guatemala. Such things have too little impact on my life for me to spend any time on them. You may have different priorities. In fact, I'm sure you do.

Contact the places the information used to be. Ask them what happened to it. We don't know.

Do you mean Proceso (One "s"), the magazine in Mexico? If so, it's inaccessible for any real purposes without a subscription.
Or, maybe you mean the Honduran e-zine.
Or, the e-zine of that name in the Dominican Republic.

It's impossible to follow your lead if you don't bother to provide more information or spell your sources correctly. Help us out here, OK?

and I did not expect, why I did the search IN SPANISH, to find much on the US side of the border. I know better. If it happens OUTSIDE the US, it mostly never appears here.

For the record though, the NYT did have a story on this, front page and everything, under the fold, the day after.

One "s" in Spanish. Two in Portuguese. It makes a difference. I found it, by searching for "Proceso," but had to guess which news source with that name you were referring to. Links are easy. Guessing is hard.

I couldn't search it, either or read anything there.

Time Magazine also did a story on it, back when it happened. What more did you expect to find from a pre-Internet incident that never grew into anything much more?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand the reason for your post. Proceso may have dropped those old archives to save money. I don't know. I sure wouldn't ascribe your missing photos to any conspiracy, though, without more evidence. Memory hole? I doubt it. It's just not that big a story this far from the time it happened. I'm surprised there's much of anything about it on the Internet.

as far as journals, of course you will find them in the JSTOR database... they do exist. Work has been done on this.

But what I was looking is the kind of PRIMARY sources that yes, up to two years ago existed on the web. Processo had photos of this online. Processo is kind of a major political mag in Mexico.

I should have saved THAT PHOTO back then.

So yes it has been scrubbed.

Do you have a subscription? If not, you can't get to the photo you're talking about there. If Proceso has closed its archives to public view, then Google can't index them. There are many possible explanations for why you can't find a particular photo.

Describe the photo or what its caption might be. It might be found from that.

Not only nadin, but the primitives in general.

The primitives, being human (or nearly so), err once in a while, and say something really stupid.

franksolich once in a while says something really stupid.

The difference being, the primitives get all ashamed and red-faced and embarrassed, and want their stupidity erased, as if it never happened, while franksolich has the attitude, "Okay, that was stupid, but I'm human and God forgives, so whatever.  Accept, adapt, and move on....."

As much as I've said around here, which undoubtedly includes a great many stupid things, I've never ever asked that something of mine be deleted.

It's the difference between squalid sordid greasy insecurity and defiant confidence that God forgives all.

Ha!  If you Google "Processo", the first entry goes to the website for "Proceso".  It's even spelled correctly.
