Ireland
« on: September 03, 2011, 04:55:46 PM »
This is one of my wife's favorite photos I took in 2006 during our visit to Ireland, specifically on Inis Mór, aka Inish Mor.

BTW, it's exactly the kind of photo I like to take. 100% un-posed, with lots of memorabilia around - like the old pair of shoes, and the flat tire on the boat trailer, and the old man with the Irish cap. I just saw this man looking into the boat and grabbed the picture.

My wife also took a hike up to Dun Aengus, a fort situated on the edge of a cliff at a height of 100 meters overlooking the Atlantic.

Beautiful!!!!!
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Well, OK. I didn't want to bore everyone, but here goes.

More of our trip to Ireland:

From Dublin.

Killarney American Legion post.

The church in Gortnahoo, Tipperary, Ireland, where my wife's 3rd great grandfather was married. The original church burned down, and this is its replacement. The owner of the farm B&B (below) knew of my wife's family on her maternal side (Ryan), and she took us to this church.

A farm B&B where we spent 2 nights, about (as it turned out) 4 miles from the above church. Our room was the closest one on the 2nd floor. We did a LOT of family tree research here. The owner and her husband corrected a lot of the mis-spellings and locations I had entered.

And yes, I really am married. Here we are with the farm's B&B owner.

That's enough for now. Are you bored yet? I have a lot more pics.  :rotf:  :cheersmate:

CG, I've come to learn just very recently that my paternal great-great grandfather emigrated from Ireland to Canada when he was a young boy of somewhere between 7-12 years old. I have no idea specifically where in Ireland he came from, only that various census records list him as being "Irish".

I have an account on ancestry.com, which has yielded a ton of information, but I cannot determine when he died. Census records from 1911 show that he was alive, but when his wife died in 1916, her marital status is listed as "widow" and I have not been able to uncover a death record of him. Nor have I been able to uncover precisely when he emigrated and through which port -- most likely Montreal, but it's anybody's guess right now.

Even if I learn nothing more about my ancestry, I never knew that I came from Irish stock until about 6 weeks ago. So your pics are very interesting to me. Mrs. E are even talking about doing a bike tour of Ireland in a couple-three years or so.

The Ireland to Canada to USA stuff in my wife's family is so confusing. Geez, my hair turned even whiter than normal!  :lmao:

Lost? This road sign should help you find something. What, is anyone's guess.

Colb (Queenstown). The buildings are painted different colors; Ireland has a contest every year for the most beautiful towns.

More... can't remember the locations right now. I'll try to come up with that info.

This is the sign for the B&B we stayed at on the farm. The shamrock on B&Bs indicates that they are inspected and approved by the country's government.
