Margin marks first statistically significant lead among registered voters by Jeffrey M. Jones

PRINCETON, NJ -- Registered voters by a significant margin now say they are more likely to vote for the "Republican Party's candidate for president" than for President Barack Obama in the 2012 election, 47% to 39%. Preferences had been fairly evenly divided this year in this test of Obama's re-election prospects.

Of course the polls always change when they start including specific republican names in them.

But hey...  I'll take 47 to 39.  That should be well outside of the margin of error.

Since this is:

a) Gallup, and

b) "registered" voters instead of "likely" voters

I suspect that it is a far bigger gap than this.  The word inside the beltway from some acquaintances is that the WH is in a state of sheer panic......their internal polling is telling them that the Magic Negro would have to "Part the Red Sea" on prime-time television to win at this point.

November of next year is a long way off, he'll have the wind at his back with the MSM, and a billion-dollar war-chest is pretty tough to overcome, but man, if we don't we're soooooo screwed.

I think that certain members of the MSM are even starting get a bit tired of him.  Not many, but a few.

I think that the money will be there.  I was reading that Obama's war chest is averaging about $60 per donor, which means that the big contributors (most of whom he's attacked for the bulk of his term) are not in yet.  It's getting no press but his high-dollar fundraisers are (so far) poorly attended.

I suspect that the big corporate and institutional money is waiting to see how the Republican candidate field is shaping up.  It was the same with GWB in '98 and '99.  The big donors (and GWB) came out of nowhere in the last twelve months of the campaign.  Let us not forget that SCOTUS gutted McCain-Feingold, so as the DUmmies say "corporate personhood" is going to play a big role in 2012 fundraising.

I see this as shaping up thusly:

Obama has no successful record to run on.......he has screwed up everything he has touched.  He can't run on "I'm not George Bush" any longer, "Hope and Change" ain't gonna cut it, the wars are still ongoing, and with unemployment and energy prices not very likely to change much in the next year, the only alternative is for him to spend a ton on "negative" and "attack" ads, which work, but only for a short time, until the public figures out that there is nothing substantial being offered by the candidate.

The Republicans conversly have an entire arsenal filled with ammunition......and millions of pissed-off Americans, particularly those that are out of work.  It's not going to be a pretty campaign, but assuming that we don't end up with the "Boston Strangler" as our candidate, I see a Republican winning in a walk.......money only helps when you have a message.......Obama really doesn't have one.

That's certainly what I'm hoping for Doc, as long as the GOP nominee isn't some dipshit who thinks he sit back as an 'Elder statesman' and play a gentlemanly game of chess for the job, while the other side is pulling every dirty trick at their disposal up to and including union thuggery and Black Panthers with 'Plausible deniability' - and the willing assistance of the MSM in maintaining the fiction.

Rasmussen had similar numbers today...48 to 41.   Last week was 48 to 42.  These were Likely Voters.

Thanks for your optimism, TVDOC.  It counteracts GOBUCKS' pessimism.  I like the guy, but I wish he wouldn't write off our side so quickly.  He was also wrong about Pelosi losing her speakership.

I started feeling better about 2012 when the likes of Mort Zuckerman and Steve Wynn started having voter's remorse.  Now I think a broken toaster oven could beat Obama.  Twitter is abuzz that Chris Christie is headed to Iowa for the first time.  I don't care if he doesn't run, because that man can SPEAK in a way that even a primitive can understand.  I'm giddy at the thought of him being a spokesman.  And, as an aside, I subscribe to Allen West's weekly email.  This is his priceless last sentence from today's offering:  "I must confess, when I see anyone with an Obama 2012 bumper sticker, I recognize them as a threat to the gene pool."  I think he'd be a great pick for VP, but, I am a huge fan, so I am biased.
