Random Pictures of NS (Not Dial up Safe!)
« on: May 22, 2011, 03:02:57 PM »
I drive a lot due to my work, not so much in winter but in the summer it's not uncommon for me to put 1000 to 2000 KM on the car a week. Thanks to how much I drive I get to see a lot of things and get to go on a huge variety of roads. While most of these roads are crap I've started stopping and taking random photos of things.

I figured I'd start this topic and just post the photos I've taken. All these are taken with an old 5mp camera.

Today it was finally sunny...after weeks of rain and cloudy skies.

This is what the province I live in looks like so enjoy:)

^^You can see that car ferry in the distance

^^These windmills all produce 30 Megawatts. I couldn't get a shot of them all. They were built very far away from any houses and no one has had any complaints. They've been quite a success.

I have to admit, I googled the phone number in that picture you took from a couple of days back, and was going to ask you what it is like living up in Nova Scotia, but I didn't want you thinking I was stalking you.  :-)

That looks like a very tranquil setting to live in.  What kind of temps do you experience throughout the year?

Lobster boats?
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

No big deal, I figured someone would look it up if I didn't bother to edit it out and I'm not to worried.

That looks like a very tranquil setting to live in.  What kind of temps do you experience throughout the year?

The temperate varies quite a lot. An average winter day is -15F and an average summer day is 75F. The coldest it can get is about -30F (That's including wind chill) and the hottest it ever gets is about 95F.

But it's different for all of Nova Scotia, those are just the averages where I am.

I will :)

Lobster boats?

I don't know much about fishing but yes I do believe those are lobster boats.

Cool.  It was just a morbid curiosity thing on my part is all, and I was too lazy to sift back through your posts, to see if you ever named the general area you were located.  It looks like you have a fair mix of dirt and paved roads?

I hope you post more pictures, too.  I had my first up close and personal experience with windmills, albeit just in pieces being trucked somewhere, down on I-10 in Florida three or four years ago.  Since then, I've seen them in action in Minnesota and Kansas.  I actually like the way they look.

Thanks for the pics, Compaq.  My wife's mother's side of the family hails from Nova Scotia from around the time of the American Revolution (family name Bentley, like the motor cars).  She appreciated being able to see a piece of her history, even if it is just a small part of a larger place.

BTW, I added another :hi5: to your collection.

And one day I hope to get up that way.  But this year I am stopping at Bar Harbor.  Speaking of ferries, to bad they couldn't keep the Cat running.  I was hoping to go to Yarmouth from Portland then drive the outside to Peggy's Cove then back down through the state of Maine.

Thanks for sharing your pictures Compaq. I've been to various parts of Canada, but never Nova Scotia.I enjoyed seeing the places I've been (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Victoria). I hope to see NS someday.

Love how quaint it looks.  Looks like the setting for a Lifetime movie!

It's quite sad the Cat is no more. Yarmouth is suffering because of it with it's largest hotel to shut down if I hear right. It was a great way to get to NS and a good way for people to get to the US. The only issue was how much they charged for it.

I've lived here most of my life and I've never gotten to Peggy's Cove. I always pass the exit when I'm driving but I've never stopped.

Thanks for sharing your pictures Compaq. I've been to various parts of Canada, but never Nova Scotia.I enjoyed seeing the places I've been (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Victoria). I hope to see NS someday.

I quite liked Ottawa, it's a very nice city. I'm set to go to Toronto sometime this summer.

It looks like you have a fair mix of dirt and paved roads?

There is a very good variety of roads here and I'm on at least one dirt road a day. Some of the dirt roads are actually in better condition then some of the paved roads.

Love how quaint it looks.  Looks like the setting for a Lifetime movie!

A lot of people have described it in similar ways :)

I have to go to one of the local towns tomorrow and I'll get some photos of the buildings when I have time. The oldest one is from 1708 so they're worth posting I think.

Nova Scotia is on my list of places to visit some day. Of course, everytime I hear the name I hear the song "Farewell to Nova Scotia" in my head

I have some very distant family in NS.  My ancestors migrated there after leaving Scotland and before setting up shop in NY/NJ.

We camped at Peggy's Cove back in 1972, the year that had "...the total eclipse of the sun," immortalized in song by Carly Simon. It rained like hell and was cloudy and we couldn't see any of the eclipse.

We didn't go there for the eclipse; it was just coincidental with our vacation trip. We loved Peggy's Cove though and had a great time camping there.

I think so.  The rides I want to make when I have time are;

Nova Scotia

Alaska

A four corners trip (not to the four corners)  A four corners trip takes you to the four corners of the US.

Everyone should see Alaska.  Even if your biggest expense is the plane ticket, it's worth it (go first class... it's a long flight).

It's on my list.  My old college roommate just bought a house in Anchorage, so I have a free place to stay.   :-)

For our 25th anniversary, I cashed in some of my United Airlines flight miles and we flew up to Anchorage and rented an RV. It was a great trip!  :cheersmate:

Mrs E and I went up to NS for our anniversary in 2007. It took a LOOOONG time to get there -- flew from Cleveland to Detroit to Toronto to Halifax. Rented a car and drove up to the NE corner - might've been Larry's River. Can't remember exactly.

Stayed in a B&B and damn near froze our asses off -- it was late May, the black flies were out, and the weather was not cooperating all that well.....

Most of these photos were taken within the last year so they're older. I found most on my hard drive and there not as good of quality as the new ones I posted. I wasn't going to bother with these ones but...

^Yet another windmill. I've only seen this stop once when it needed repair. It's in a good spot.

This is known as the Digby Gut and had some nice fog in it when I took the photo.

^A picture I got while on a back road one evening.

^This is the Maude Lewis Memorial house and thanks to how it was built have lights on at night making it sort of "glow"
