I'm new (posted in the Intro. sec) - thought first post should address my current area of "expertise."
I didn't see a category for education issues, so this seemed the best place.
I teach high school English - I'm leaving the profession (been at it three years, second career).
Most of my colleagues have a useless "education degree" (theory and practice), toe the socialist party line, and can not write their way out of a paper bag. I have degrees in English Lit. and Russian, was forced to take the "edu-theory-feelgood" classes for certification.
I teach the hard cases in a tough neighborhood - I like it and am good at it, but am prevented from having the normal 4 or 5 serious troublemakers (guns, fighting) removed from my class by the district fear of lawsuits. Over half my class time is spent on discipline, not English.
The district spent 564 million on new construction this year and now find themselves 20 million in the hole. Teachers will be let go, classes will get larger (40 students a class). My kids had no books the first 8 weeks of this school year. Idiots. Can't balance a checkbook (with OUR money) and wonder why they can't teach the kids anything.
I'm done.
