Adios Education
« on: March 25, 2011, 11:59:54 AM »
I'm new (posted in the Intro. sec) - thought first post should address my current area of "expertise."

I didn't see a category for education issues, so this seemed the best place.

I teach high school English - I'm leaving the profession (been at it three years, second career).

Most of my colleagues have a useless "education degree" (theory and practice), toe the socialist party line, and can not write their way out of a paper bag. I have degrees in English Lit. and Russian, was forced to take the "edu-theory-feelgood" classes for certification.

I teach the hard cases in a tough neighborhood - I like it and am good at it, but am prevented from having the normal 4 or 5 serious troublemakers (guns, fighting) removed from my class by the district fear of lawsuits. Over half my class time is spent on discipline, not English.

The district spent 564 million on new construction this year and now find themselves 20 million in the hole. Teachers will be let go, classes will get larger (40 students a class). My kids had no books the first 8 weeks of this school year. Idiots. Can't balance a checkbook (with OUR money) and wonder why they can't teach the kids anything.

I'm done.

I started out in college majoring in education, with an eye toward teaching business and accounting in high schools.  Year and a half in, and I couldn't take the edu-theory moonbattery any longer.  It was a whole lot of sociology-speak balloon juice, with every other word being "cognitive."  I switched my major to cold hard accounting and have been working at that ever since.

I'm sorry you're throwing in the towel, I fear so much for our schools.

Hi Cats!

More power to you for being able to power through the ed classes - I didn't even last a semester before removing myself.  Except for a couple really shining examples, your experience with the ed students is the same as mine.

Hate to hear that you're leaving teaching but understand.  Have you thought of private, parochial, or charter schools?

The DOJ and FBI without warning swooped into a NC high school Wednesday and took all their records and computers because they had disciplined a higher percentage of blacks than whites. They were warned about that last year so they quit disciplining anyone and apparently even that wasn't good enough for the Great Won and his minions.

Democrats are going to drive all the whites out of the schools so "FREE" education is only for blacks in the south and whites only in the very blue left coast and northeast. The rest of us will be paying taxes to educate "their" kids while we have to pay out of pocket to educate our own.

Yep. The kids I teach need continuity and discipline - they don't get it anywhere - they'll never learn self control and goal setting - lawyers won't let'em. Pathetic.

Saw your flag - I'm in Charleston.  :cheersmate:

(with my best southern drawl)...Well hay there sugar.... :-)

You live down there near some counties that already have the problem I've described.

And just for your information, I flunked first semester freshman English 3 times and then the second semester English twice....and finally had English classes out of the way....until my advisor made a mistake and stuck me in another English class....I gave up in the middle of that semester and dropped out of college... :lmao:

So feel free to grade my writing and spelling skills and flunk me. I'm used to it...and just don't give a damn anymore... :lmao:

I'm a high school English teacher, too. Catholic. 15 years.

When I got certified, I just smiled and nodded a lot. I taught public school for a few years. Then my dream job opened. I love it.

Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

It's a mess - me being a white male in an all black school pisses the administrators off to no end; kids are great - my official hood name is "whack-cracker."  :mental:

I hate to leave, but I'm too old for this nonsense - all about the kids, my ass - all about the easy way out.

I'm going to look in to it - I went to private school, got a hell of an education - shame it has to be that way.

Yeah, the cat thing gets me a lot of that on the boards - I've been using it so long, I'm stuck with it.

Male, married, no kids.

Alright - I'm off to crush some beercans on my head!  :cheersmate:

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson.
