It's a dramatic step even in the age of strict health and safety.

A public school in Florida is making all its first-grade pupils rinse out their mouths and wash their hands before coming into class and after lunch - because one child has a severe peanut allergy.

Teachers must continually wipe down desks with Clorox wipes, children cannot bring in outside food for parties and a peanut-sniffing dog has even been brought into the school grounds.

Angry parents protested against the strict measures outside the gates of Edgewater Elementary School, Florida, last week. They are designed to protect one six-year-old girl, who has not been named.

They claim their children are losing time in class and are having their faces wiped with Clorox. One mother even said the rules - which also ban all peanut products - were intruding on her child's right to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch.

But Tracey Bailey, the girl's mother, told Fox her daughter has a life-threatening peanut allergy and could die if she comes into contact with any trace of the nut.

According to a letter issued by the school, she could have a severe reaction just from sitting next to a pupil who had eaten peanuts.

Mrs Bailey said: 'We're not talking about she will break out in a rash. We are talking about she will die, stop breathing.'

If my kid could die from sitting next to another kid that just ate a peanut I would not send my kid to school. And I'd happily show the teacher what it feels like to have their face washed with a clorox wipe (even though they don't contain bleach).

The movies? A vacation? Disney World?

DOES SHE LIVE IN A BUBBLE WHEN NOT AT SCHOOL?

Can someone please explain to me why something like peanut allergies were never an issue when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s?  What is going on with the human race?

I'm not sure but I think things like what this school is trying to do is part of the problem. Everything today has to be clean or else it's no good, I think to some extent kids are less immune because of it.

I grew up on a farm and later moved to the city and I was always healthier in terms of what I caught and  I caught less then the other kids who caught more or less everything.

Thats always been part of my theory on it.

I do believe that you're on the right track, compaq. With the advent of disinfectant soaps, it does seem that people tend to be ill more often these days. A lot of that is all due to many of the bad germs being killed and us not developing an immunity to them.

Part of the problem is that ALL of the bad germs aren't being killed but are being made stronger by the anti-bacterial soaps.  What doesn't kill them , makes them stronger.

I am all for making accommodations for children to access the general curriculum, however those accommodations cannot be invasive to another child.   You cannot expect a class to wipe their mouths with clorox wipes (WTF is that all about?), or even rinse their mouths, to accommodate your child.

Ban peanuts from the school?  sure.   Require students to do anything to their bodies to protect yours?   no way.

"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Part of the problem is that ALL of the bad germs aren't being killed but are being made stronger by the anti-bacterial soaps.  What doesn't kill them , makes them stronger.

What a issue this is---How in the heck is this child going to have any kind of life with that allergy ???  Some people actually out grow a childhood allergy, when Adults will for no know reason develope one to something they have been around for 60 years.

First thought is this child is indeed very special, and in need of protection.   How to explain to a child that age that she is different from every one else.??   Everyone is different from others in some way and we learn to live with the difference.

I would imagine that there are millions of kids with special needs that have to learn to live with their disability, how to thrive under very unusual circumstances.   The mother of the child points out that for her child to sit next to anyone that had eaten peanuts and breath in their breath could kill her.

So be it, the parents must accept that their child is not NORMAL in a health problem from everyone in the world.   This is not the fault of the child or the parents,  When we have children we accept them as they are and not expect the neighbor not to mow his lawn or raise cats because the child has a violent reaction to them as an allergy.

Is it impossible to find a face mask for the child to wear and plastic gloves if the allergy is so bad she could fall over dead just from touching peanut oil???

To go off into examples, say a child has an allergy this dangerous to human hair.    All members of the family or anyone in contact with the child must shave their entire body's of all hair, including eye brows eye lashes etc.   All people entering the home must remove clothing in an outer room as a stray hair from a coworker may have landed on their clothing.

6 years later the child is ready to go to school, the parents demand that the school system, from the school bus driver, all students, teachers anyone who works for the school including the janitor do the same for their child's protection.

Yes, I know ultra extreme example ---but, who is responcible for the health of this child.???  Is it not the parents responcibility to care for their child and not expect complete strangers to live any kind of hardship or change in their lives  to base their own choices around the benifit of their child.????

I can see a law suit on the way for the school, town and even State if this child does die because a little kid sitting next to them are sneaking peanut M&M's

My sister, now 62 years old, has had a peanut allergy all of her life. She lives with it and deals with it by consciously avoiding peanuts and all peanut products. She has been taken to ERs when she mistakenly eats something that is supposed to NOT contain any peanut products.

I think she also carries an emergency syringe for anaphalactic shock.

That said, there was no issue with this during her school years. The schools knew about it and she avoided problems.

Few allergy's were about then except for poison ivy or sumac.       So what has changed in these years to cause all these allergy's ??

Could start with Rachel Carson and her book  " Silent Spring" that caused the Liberals to insure DDT was never again to be used.

Like a wolf at the door the chemical company's were all so ready to replace this insecticide with their own, never tested or-found to be safe chemicals.   This opened the door to all kinds of stuff that was manufactured to be put on the market, Carpets, drapes ,sheets with a warning to wash first before using, building material full of Formaldehyde and who knows what. Chemical preservatives in food and all those extra ingredients that have 10 letters in their name.

When I first started looking into wall to wall carpetering  I saw all these warnings that once installed the home needed to be aired out for some time.    The pre built homes had a warning in them that formaldehyde was present and needed to be cleared out.

Peanuts and an allergy, only lately have we been informed of the danger to mold that may be present in peanut butter that has been opened and left for a few months on the shelf.  Has anyone ever looked at a jar of peanut butter and noticed all the preservatives in them.??

Possible a woman who is two or three weeks pregnant may eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwitch that has been on the shelf too long.   She may not become ill, but the toxin may effect her baby.

BTW now we see an upsurge in bed bugs that in past years were removed with DDT,  now we find we have to use much more potent chemicals to remove them---and hope they work.

Where does an allergy start when no one on either side of the family for 4 generations back have it.????     Has to be chemicals or some kind of mold or toxin that was taken in before the mother was even aware she was pregnant.     For the Adults that suddenly become allergic to something, this it seems to me to be a build up of toxins that explode in the body.
