Sailor Shot by Police on Navy Base

One sailor was shot by Navy police and another was taken into custody uninjured after they allegedly smashed their vehicle into two Navy police units during a chase on the San Diego Naval Base early Saturday morning.

The shot sailor was transported to UCSD Medical Condition where he is in stable condition.

Between 1 and 1:30 a.m., the Navy confirmed the two sailors, whose names have not been released, arrived at the Naval Base gate where they were stopped due to a "very strong suspicion" for drunk driving.

The gate guard called Navy dispatch, but instead of waiting for Navy officers to arrive on scene, the sailors sped off, and a small vehicle chase began, said Brian O'Rourke, Navy Region Southwest public affairs officer.

Ok, I can believe that. Mistakes were made, someone paid.   

Nothing good ever happens after midnight, less so when you are drunk.

Too bad someone got shot, but, as they say, one should think about that before getting drunk.

Brig time is "dead time". Always has been that way. I suspect that they'll get NJP & a NADSAP referral/ assessment. Depends on whether or not they were dirtbags problem Sailors to begin with.

Something tells me the driver ain't gonna get off nearly that easy.  CCU at the very least (more likely brig) followed by an OTH or BCD.

You know the deal--RIR to E-1, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and the Big Chicken Dinner!

Big Navy doesn't take kindly to people trying to crash the gates and run over base security vehicles.  They took a DUI and made it into several felonies.

I don't know what they were thinking trying to get  back on base when they were drunk off their asses - base checks at night are always 100% id (so everyone in the car needs to show their id).   

You ram a gate entry and actually walk away alive?  lucky bastards.  However their luck is completely over.   They are done.

at sea if they are drunk their relieved and handed over to the MAA until xfered out for prosecution

Drinking is against regulations aboard US Naval vessels UNLESS the Skipper allows a beer day. Even then, people will get like two beers only. Of course, not that I'd know anything about it, but I have heard of certain folks sneaking liquor aboard.... :whistling: It's amazing of all of the hiding places in an H-46......

When my grandfather was in the Royal British Navy, he would have thrown them in the brig, and that would be the end of it....

Forcing a gate or overpowering a sentry is exactly what the UCMJ charge of 'Forcing a Safeguard' is all about, aside from the more pedestrian (So to speak) crimes involved, like what the civilian world calls 'Reckless endangerment' or 'Assault with a deadly weapon' (Often used for someone trying to ram or run over someone else with a car.

More importantly, though, these dipshits are lucky to be alive, in these days of heightened tension over terrorism, they could easily have ended up pumped full of holes for doing crazy shit at the gate to an installation.

No kiddin', it sounds like these guys stopped, but when they were confronted, then charged the gate. IMHO, it's a wonder they weren't "air conditioned" with a whole lot of holes!

Actually, that guy had a case of PTSD and/ or some other psychological problems. He had called to get some counseling the day before AND they day of the tank incident, but was turned away. He had been acting strange or a week or two according to his wife.
