Dammit to hell in a handbasket.   :banghead:  I am sorry that she had this experience and hope for her full recovery.  But.............

How the hell CBS and Ms. Logan could have missed the point that there are inheirent dangers diddling around a square, in the middle of protests, especially ones led by muslims is beyond me.  Shame on them for stupidity.  For shame.

Hi,

While I totally agree with you all about the muslim values and behavior, I have been to Cairo and brought my wife with me.  We have met and dined with several Egytian men and their wives and it is the one muslim country I have been in where they have come out of the dark ages so to speak as far as women are concerned.  I recall many of the women had jobs, one was a doctor and very well respected.

What appears to me has happened was she got caught up in the middle of some of the muslim extremists who want to turn Egypt back into the dark ages.  It was a terrible thing that happened and my heart goes out to her; there is enough blame to go around to a lot of folks for her being in that position.  At the same time, since I was a child during WWII, battlefield correspondents know they are taking huge risks.  They do it because it also brings huge rewards when they are succesful.

Recall when they first bombed Baghdad and the three CNN correspondents were holed up in the hotel reporting.  My guess is they made tons of money for speaking engagements as a result of that experience.  Had an errant bomb accidentally hit the hotel, it would have just been the bad luck of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Some have suggested the young lady may well have been a bit naive and had a false sense of security.  Were I to guess, I would fall in the group that suspects that also.

I hear you, and I remember Baghdad as well.  I don't recall women there, well, was Christiane Amanpour there? I think she was somewhere else, but reporting at the same time.   My point was, if you are in the middle of a Muslim uprising that perhaps being a blonde girl, dressed Western wasn't a great idea.  Although I understand that journalists expose themselves to danger, to do their job, they don't do it with a naive sense of security.

If you are a western woman, in an eastern country, regardless of reason, you should be well-protected.  Period.  She wasn't, and that is a shame.

ok this is I view it.
#1 she is a woman going to a country, where men don't view their women very highly
#2 Egypt is a place of civil unrest
#3 If her boss had said to her, you cannot go because of the above reasons, could she sue him for discrimination??
#4 Why couldn't she have done her reporting away from the major rioters??
#5 Do international journalists have a liability clause that says they cannot sue (anybody)for personal damages including their own bodies, and enter a country of civil unrest at their own risk.
#6 Did she ask to go or did her boss tell her to go??

I am sure she wanted to go, because of the opportunity, and I don't blame her for that gumption.  I am sure the Risk Mgmt dept at CBS has policies in place for just this kind of thing.  However, I believe that there was a supreme sense of naivety, on both parts, as to what they thought might happen.

I have a buddy, who is a roughneck, and has to go to Yemen at least twice a year.  When he goes, he travels with a Saudi bodyguard crew, of at minimum 4 people.  He also has to sign paperwork stating he understands if he dies there, his beneficiaries get no life insurance.

Hi,

Wow, I hope your friend is paid in proportion to the risk being taken.  What I found most interesting is that he has done the gig several times, you can't continue to roll the dice double or nothing and expect to survive.

I wish your friend well.

In rereading this I realized something.  In the last month I had a friend return from Iraq.  His reward, he got promoted to E-4.

Hi.

He is paid well, and he has volunteered for the last few times he has gone, as he has no children.  Poor buddy, he gets to go to Siberia in the winter, and Yemen in the summer.  He always brings gifts back for his friends, I told him I wanted a I "heart" Yemen shot glass.   :-)  Haven't gotten one yet, and he has been there 5 times since I started asking for it.

I haven't seen you around much, 5412, it is good to see you.  I always learn something from your posts.

Take care,

I notice Islamic culture is more prone to deviance and psychopathy. Rape is usually motivated by sexual dominance, not sexual pleasure.

There will be no further comment from CBS News and Correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.

CBS may not be commenting, but since I've been up since 4:30 this morning ( :censored: ), it's been all over the tv. I started with Fox at 4:30, watching last night's reruns, and Fox and Friends, til I switched it over to the local CBS affiliate, then the CBS morning show, and it's been reported all morning. Every news brief and even the anchors talking about it. All have wished her a speedy recovery.

I understand that women want these assignments just as the men do....but I don't understand why....a young, fairly sexy, BLONDE, woman, that I am assuming is intelligent or she wouldn't be an international correspondent...was dressed the way she was, going into that type of situation in that part of the world?

Common sense should have told her to be as completely covered as much as possible, and a baseball cap covering up all that blonde hair. Like M said, when he saw it this morning, said she might as well have been waving a red flag in front of a bull.

I am in no way making excuses for those animals that attacked her....but, geesh o'Pete! Those couldn't have been the only clothes she had with her going into a predominately muslim area. Even if they were, she could have buttoned up her jacket to her neck, and borrowed a ball cap from one of the guys on her crew.

Her crew must be feeling so guilty, for getting separated from her. They have to be constantly thinking that one of them could have either prevented the attack, or gotten her away.

Thank God, for the women who heard her, and brought the soldiers. She's very lucky. I hope and pray, that not only does she have a complete physical recovery, but also a good emotional recovery - if that is possible.

I do hope, that any future reporters going into the area, both female and male....take this atrocity to heart, and make sure that they have either bodyguards or very large crew members that stick to them like glue.

Oh crap....I didn't even think about that!!

As if the attack wasn't bad enough...now she will have years of wondering if she was infected.

Not sure where she first received medical treatment...but here in the US, I think rape victims are given a choice if they wish to take a "morning after" pill.

I know there is a time frame as to how long after a rape, that the pill will work, but I don't know what it is. I do know, that sperm can live for about 72 hours in the female body.

Well said Debk, Even Laurence of Arabia knew enough to dress as the people did.

There are some things that are common sense here.   One does not visit the Vatican Church bare headed wearing shorts, flip flops and a sleeveless blouse.  Hell, we cannot even in this country get into a restaurant without a dress code, or a 7/11--No shirt, no shoes, no service.

One does not walk through Projects in this country late at night alone wearing lots of gold jewelery.

Comes down to respect and following the laws of others you decide to visit for any reason.  I saw a picture of her out on patrol with our service men and she dressed as they did down to the helmet.  She was not leaping along behind them wearing hooker heels and a mini skirt in the desert.

OK I am ready for the BS's---but in a way I agree with the Muslim Cleric from Australia that got into hot water that said that if you throw raw meat into the back yard and cats come along and eat it, who can blame the cats.??

This was not her visit to Egypt, she saw and knew for years the traditions of the natives of that city. She could most likely recite from memory  the rules of Sharia and she flaunted them.  Terrible price to pay but at least she was not tied and whipped 100 times.

She may as well have gone into an Oakland Hells Angles Bar naked and tried to interview the members of that club., shake hands all around and leave in the safety of her crew that are pissing their pants.

She is is a professional who must act the part in foreign nations especially when a revolt is going strong.  She made a terrible decision to think a culture that never or seldom sees females dress like a whore --to them---would respect her as a Journalist doing a job or as a woman or even human under their laws.

Telling point is she was at first rescued by the WOMAN who must have thought she was insane.   Second was the fact that when the military became involved that THEY did not rape her also.

Very lucky woman to get out alive of there, but she is one tough cookie and will recover and have an interesting story to tell her grand kids someday---if she lives that long.

Rant ended---for now.
