The only time I've seen one of our city buses at capacity (or anywhere near) was when they were giving rides away for free.

I hate driving downtown and I'm willing to park my car and take the bus to avoid that mess.

Hell, I ride the bus to campus almost every day (unless it's nice enough to ride my bike). I actually just got off of one. I'm always amazed how few people are on them. Three other riders when I went to class this morning, five coming home. I'm glad I have it though. There's a bus stop 60 feet from my front door and another one right on campus and I pay for it in tuition already. I guess that's one way to finance your operation. Have 50,000 college students help pay for it... Beats paying $200/year to park so far out that I'd have to get on a bus anyways.

Yup! I used to go to this Irish pub for NYE every year, but haven't been in a couple years. Been meaning to go back. They make one hell of a shepherds pie.

I may have to check it out.  I go to the Old Monk often, and I believe they are owned by the same dude.

Nearest bus stop to my front door is 76 miles! Still, even when I lived in Spokane, I road the thing twice, and that's cause my truck was in the shop! Little hard to carry a coupla thousand dollars worth of tools in a shoppin' cart that the bus driver wouldn't let me on with anyway!

Yeah, same guy. He owns a few others. Gotta figure a guy from Ireland would come to the States and open a bunch of bars...

Definitely check it out. They have a pretty good beer selection.

I am all for mass transit as long as

A) There is a need for it
B) there is a company that can see a way to make a profit by fulfilling that need

I have no doubt larger cities like Los Angeles could have a sustainable private mass transit system.  There's been a whole lot of ink and spittle spilled over GM's "conspiracy" to kill their mass-transit system in the late 40's to sell more cars and drive road-building.  But it won't work in Raleigh, Birmingham, or Nashville unless you confined it to the inner-city area and major traffic routes where it stood a chance of being used.

Spokane's is decent I suppose, but it really only entails the metro area. They do have parking lots on the outskirts where you can park for free and ride into town though. Somethin' major Blue paradises are sorely lacking. They may have parking lots, but they are rarely free, and when ya get back, your car, if not towed, is sittin' on blocks!

They say a big ol SUV is an extention of a mans wang...what's a big ol truck or SUV mean if a woman has(or wants) one? The thought of even getting in a small car sends me into a panic right now.....I even want a big ol cow catcher bumper on my vehicle.....
Well this lady drives a lifted 1977 grand wagoneer and a 2008 wrangler and I love them. Gets me to work and school during the week and a play toy on the weekends. They are both payed for, safe and actually less expensive than riding mass transit. The half hour trip by POV would take me over two hours with mass transit.

If you want to see real madness check out all the stuff surrounding the new wave train in Norfolk, VA. That thing is so over it's huge budget it isn't funny, it doesn't really go anywhere and has yet to even carry a single paying rider.

Public transportation: Mobile mugging centers for the oppressed.

MARTA defined.

Doesn't even have to be mobile.  Go to any DC Metro station.

Anyone who steps foot in DC without lots of back up is just askin' for it! Unless of course you're a politician. They leave the politicians alone so their checks won't be interrupted.

Actually NYC and DC transit systems are about as safe as you could expect given that there is always a potential for random violence anywhere, as long as you're travelling during normal commuting and business hours on weekdays.  Any other times, you're an idiot to be on them.
