DUmmies Discuss Civilized People And Empty Buses

DUmmy grasswire, aware that she's being laughed at by decent and civilized people, admits straying from the monkey house:

I learned something new about wingnuts over on the site for banished freepers
I had no idea that conservatives are vehemently opposed to mass transportation because they might subsidize through their tax dollars a commuter train in Silicon Valley or the NE corridor.

And one freeper who favors the rail systems was actually banned from freerepublic for posting his thoughts.

And on the copycat site, others are taking him on again. They HATE mass transportation. They think it endangers their rights to drive vehicles anywhere and everywhere they want. And they sure don't want those goddam big city folks getting to work without cars!

Wow.

Outside of Chicago and the Northeast hellhole, the term "mass transit" means empty buses and empty exorbitantly expensive light rail cars shuffling around their routes, occupied only by their highly paid AFSME union operators. Their paying customers cover such a microscopic part of their operating expense, it would be cheaper to buy and fuel a car for every single customer. One reason that isn't an option is because it wouldn't funnel as much tax money into the democrat unions.

1. traditionally they have blocked mass transit because of fear
that it would bring crime (in the minds of the most racist RWers, aka African Americans) out into the suburbs... At least that was the racist attitude that has always kept MARTA from moving out into the Atlanta suburbs. Just to underscore, I'll let you figure out what they say MARTA stands for. A hint. Moving A__ Rapdly through Atlanta....

Sadly, those pillars of the Kenyan's base all have their own cars. Besides, if they come on buses, how are they going to haul all of our stuff back to the ghetto?

13. ^^^^^This.
Yes, it stems from the NIMBY attitude of rich folks who don't want that "element" able to move about the area. They feel that way about the city bus system here, too. It's quite sickening.

Please DUmbass, everyone has a car! We don't want democrat felons in our neighborhoods, but we can't keep them out. And no bus line would come within miles of our subdivision gates, anyway.

38. 1). A lot of RW males see their SUV as an extension of their you-know-what, 2).
most right-wingers today are faux Christians whose attitude is, "I've got mine so **** you," and 3). most right-wingers are against anything for the common good; hence, their opposition to mass transit.

Nope again. We're against stupid wastes of money.

DUmmy bobbolink, who is homeless, is one of those rare DUmmies who misspelled their own user name when signing up at the DUmp:

42. Was there ever a "love thy neighbor" time in the U.S.?
The only thing that changes is the object of the unlove.

Homeless people are rapidly usurping the space of unloved formerly occupied by minorities.

Now come on, DUmmy bobbo, that isn't true of fair. We've always disliked wino bums.

grown people I meet who have NEVER ridden Marta, either bus or rail.

Well, now, DUmmy Phentex, some of us would, but Rush's lovely ex-wife won't give us the time of day.

35. I assume you mean the premise against mass transit is nonsense
and not the point I've made, backed by others, in terms of the role overt racism and classism has played, especially in the South.

Wrong again, DUmbass. The "old money" parts of town have bus service. It gets the domestic help to work and back.

36. Yes, the premise against mass transit by the RW is completely ridiculous
In addition to Sewickley, another wealthy Pittsburgh suburb, Mt. Lebanon, has a heavily-travelled light-rail line running through it. And to the best of my knowledge, Sewickley and Mt. Lebanon both have very low violent crime rates. The notion that mass transit brings crime into wealthy (usually white) suburbs is nothing more than a myth.
Mass transit may bring crime into suburbs, but usually it's just empty buses and rail cars, operated by lavishly paid union thugs, all at taxpayer expense.

2. Don't they have any idea what role mass transit has played
historically in the growth and development of the wealth of cities and towns in the US?

Trains? Hello!

If we are going to revitalize urban areas we absolutely are going to need to revitalize mass transit.
And mass transit is going to be a necessary part of fighting endless sprawl, and global warming.
Mass transit played a role until we developed a standard of living that included personal transportation. Now, even vagrant bums like bobbo the hobo have cars. And who wants to "revitalize" urban areas? (A synonym for "urban area" is "rotted out blue shithole".)

It's almost like someone believing in voodoo or the flat earth. I thought everyone appreciated mass transit.

DUmmy grasswire would like to get rid of cars. She's squatting in a charity room over someone's garage up in Wisconsin. If they had to get rid of their cars, she could store some of her shit down there in the garage.

Wrong, DUmmy EV_Ares. In America, even the poor and minorities have personal transportation. Hence, all those empty buses and train cars.

One has to always remember that in a DUmmies "mind" mass transit is not city busses but some sort of on demand free transportation for them.

I see mostly empty buses running through our small town all the time.  I wonder what the equivalent carbon footprint of those riders are versus people who drive cars.

  Naive, googly-eyed moonbat.

Public transportation means you are not in control.  Witness that big snowstorm in NYC.  People on the subways were stranded for hours and hours on end, no bathrooms, no progress reports, no anything, and completely under the boot of the loafing union thugs.  I felt terrible for those people.  I avoid public transportation like I avoid public toilets.

Or better yet, where I work 45 MILES from where I live?  Yes, they have a bus that runs from Portsmouth to Rochester.  Oh goody--it only took 3 hours to get that far.  Now what do I do for the other 20 miles?

yeppers 40 miles from nowhere and plumb lost.....If I lived in the 'burbs of a big city I'd prolly take the train into the city. But it's nit worth it to put public transit out in "flyover"country....
They say a big ol SUV is an extention of a mans wang...what's a big ol truck or SUV mean if a woman has(or wants) one? The thought of even getting in a small car sends me into a panic right now.....I even want a big ol cow catcher bumper on my vehicle.....

Out-of-control shoplifting at the St. Louis Galleria. Violent attacks in the Delmar Loop. Is MetroLink a vehicle for crime?

St. Peters alderman Don Aytes remembers well the fears some of his constituents expressed back in 1998, the year MetroLink supporters tried to bring light rail into suburban St. Charles County.

"I thought for sure it would pass, and then someone on the MetroLink campaign made the decision to advertise that the train would connect Mid Rivers Mall with East St. Louis," Aytes recalls. "That pretty much killed it right there. Soon you had people saying MetroLink riders would come to St. Charles by train and leave by car — stolen car."

In November 2006 police arrested five juveniles and four older teenagers following a fistfight at the Galleria that involved dozens of minors.
Four months later in March, another fight in the mall — this one involving up to 100 teens — led to three more arrests and the Galleria imposing new sanctions on teenagers.

Store owners in University City speculate the ban has resulted in pushing troublemakers six stops up the MetroLink line to the Delmar Loop.

In recent weeks dozens of those same teens have been implicated in violent attacks that have hospitalized people working and living near the light rail stations in the Loop and the nearby DeBaliviere neighborhood. On July 26 a group of at least twenty teens assailed a family as they left the platform at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere station. That same night another group, according to police, attacked a person at the Delmar station.

"There must have been 400 teenagers," estimates Tony Huelsmann, a bartender at the Delmar Lounge, which sits on the city's border. "They streamed by our windows for fifteen minutes. The University City police had a K-9 unit out pushing the kids along, and it's a good thing, in my opinion."
After arriving in front of The Pageant the crowd quickly turned violent, according to police. In an adjacent parking lot a group assaulted an employee of Pi Restaurant.  Minutes later a similar throng of unruly youths jumped another Pi staffer outside the restaurant.

Metro claims it will face a $45 million deficit by 2010.

And it's all downhill from there.  They have armed guards now on the East Side rides.

I seem to recall SystematicChaos bitching about his free shuttle service to the Dr. office and how Jeanette had to go wait at the corner because the driver couldn't find his address. The driver left and SystematicChaos missed his appointed free Dr. visit. He had Jeanette call and complain.

The idjits that are the big proponents of it always look to Europe for a model, problem being that very little of the US has anything like the same population density as Europe, except for the NE/Boswash corridor and Chicago.  The California metro areas are pervasively covered with buildings and homes, but the density is still low enough that a shitload of people would end up driving nearly as far to a station as they would have to drive in order to just go straight to their destinations, nor are their work/recreation destinations nearly as centralized.

My thoughts on high-speed rail and toys like maglev I've said before, building anything beyond a technology demonstrator for scientists and engineers to screw around with is a shocking waste of money that would actually be more wisely spent in researching rocket-sneakers that burn large quantities of $100 bills for fuel and the necessary flame-retardant pants to go with them.

However, Amtrak is actually an important economic strategic capability that is worth the modest investment to keep it functional.  Intercity long lines rail running over the bulk freight standard guage right-of-ways is a whole different proposition from unused commuter light rail running on dedicated tracks that can't be used for anything else.  I don't favor expanding it or pushing it beyond a warm-base capability, but it's still a worthwhile backup against airline industry crises like the post-9/11 grounding order.

Cars didn't promote the suburbs. Crime, taxes, and liberal policies promoted the suburbs. People got tired of having their money stolen through taxation to give to people who didn't earn it, and then having to fear that those same people reaping the benefits from their taxes would wind up robbing them or killing them.

My company offers a free DART pass, good for bus and rail, if you commit to utilizing public transportation 4 days a week.  With the new rail infrastructure, I can get to work in the same time it takes me to drive.  I SO wanted to take the rail, save money on gas, stress, wear and tear on my car, etc.  The train station is about a 10 minute walk away from work.  Under a highway, with no crosswalk.  GRRRRRRR.   :thatsright:  And the Park n Ride stations are a terra!  I wouldn't mind em in daylight.  Maybe.

I have a bus stop a mile and a half from my house. I'd love to ride it to work except for 2 things. (1) It doesn't run when I go to work at 3:30 am and (2) It doesn't go anywhere near where I work. Ooops

Then there's the whole problem of the bus not running anywhere I need to go. I'd have to walk past a convience store, McDonalds, Post office and a shopping center with a Publix, my bank and a Subway to get to the  bus stop. The Super WallyMart is about a quarter mile further down the road so it would be beyond DUmmie stupid to ride the bus to a place I can see from the bus stop.

Hell, I ride the bus to campus almost every day (unless it's nice enough to ride my bike). I actually just got off of one. I'm always amazed how few people are on them. Three other riders when I went to class this morning, five coming home. I'm glad I have it though. There's a bus stop 60 feet from my front door and another one right on campus and I pay for it in tuition already. I guess that's one way to finance your operation. Have 50,000 college students help pay for it... Beats paying $200/year to park so far out that I'd have to get on a bus anyways.
