Global Warming.

 :-)

You sure?  You've SEEN my driveway.  Also, I have an "ice bump" in the front where the plows built up the slush and I didn't get to it in time.  It's about 6 inches high right now.

Actually, yesterday, as I was plowing out the latest 8-inches addition of "global warming" to my driveway and porches (BTW--the snow piles on the back porch are now most of the way up to the upper railing, and nearly chest-deep at the bottom of the steps so Laddie can get out to pee) I ran the snowblower across the road to clear out in front of the mailbox.  Up to the bottom of the box, about 4-5 feet back, and a 20-foot wide swath, just so the mail truck can get in and deliver my mail.  Yes, kids, it's true--if you don't clear it out, they won't deliver your mail.

And this morning I'm going to dump a 50-lb bag of driveway melt and sand on the driveway in a futile attempt at getting some of the packed stuff to melt.

Oh, and I just ran across this in the local fishwrap.

DOVER — The outlook for the rest of the winter isn't looking good for those already tired of the cold and snow.

AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi predicts cold weather will continue to dominate at least through mid-February across much of the eastern two-thirds of the country. He also said "wintry events" could last into April, longer than last year's season.

Based on what is predicted for the rest of the season, Bastardi also says that this winter could end up being the coldest for the nation as a whole since the 1980s.

Bastardi also predicts more persistent colder-than-normal temperatures and a lack of brief warm spells typical to most winters. Temperatures since Dec. 1 have averaged below normal from Boston to Miami and as far west as Minneapolis.

The biggest snowstorms in February will target areas mainly north of a line running from the Mason-Dixon Line to the Ohio River and I-40 across the Plains, according to Bastardi.

It will not be until late February into March that opportunities arise for the colder-than-normal weather pattern to break. However, Bastardi warns that there could be a return of cold and storms across the northern part of the nation, including the Great Lakes and Northeast, from mid- or late March into April.

(SNIP)

More immediately, the National Weather Service is predicting temperatures well below zero this weekend and the N.H. Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management urges New Hampshire residents and visitors to take precautions to protect themselves and their property against the cold.

Daytime high temperatures are expected to be in single digits, with overnight lows between 10 and 30 degrees below zero.

"Temperatures this cold put people at increased risk of frostbite if they don't dress properly and take other precautions," said Christopher M. Pope, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management in a press release. "People should dress in layers, cover up as much as possible and limit their time outdoors."

Pope noted that frostbite is a particular threat to people participating in outdoor recreation because they are exerting themselves and may not notice the cold.

Sosnowski said AccuWeather is currently tracking a storm heading up the coast that could bring up to another foot of snow to the region, depending on the path it takes.

Which means we will be blowing through a tank of oil every month, and the last day of school will get bumped out until the end of June with possible school vacations being canceled.

Wait..... school vacations being canceled?  Kids in school instead of home.  Hmmmmm, that's not so bad.   :-)

Thank goodness my neighbor took down their nativity scene...I don't think I could bear hearing Baby Jesus laughing at me again.  :bawl:

Although from the looks of it so far, the Low is gonna stay close to the coast, so all we should get is rain/wintry mix.

I lived in Minnesota for a total of 18 years. Four years while in the Navy and 14 years post Navy. I got tired of dealing with the snow & cold and moved back to Texas. -20 to -40 almost every winter. That's ACTUAL outside air temp, not just wind chill.

Sorry Thor, We really shouldn't complain much, as the winter is the worst part of living in New England

Dunno about that. I lived in NE from 1975 to 1979 and I thought the worst part of living there was dealing with the taxes, the libs, and the traffic in Boston. Coming in at a distant 4th might be the winters.

Then you would remember the blizzard of 78, now that was a snowstorm and a half... I was 13 then, but I remember watching on TV seeing cars on the side of the Interstate 128 and 93 being stranded on the highway for hours!!!!!

Back then there were no snowblowers that I remember. We shoveled for days it seemed...

Yes, I do. That was the winter I played two bugle jobs - one of them inside the chapel at Ft. Devens because it was so cold. I don't think I'd ever seen that much snow before or since. Amazing.

Hell, that snow storm even affected Norfolk, Va. back in 1978. The Chesapeake Bay was even frozen over. That's one of the storms that I went out and learned how to drive in the snow.

Well, it's official.  -12 this morning, 15 mph winds, for wind chill of about -32.

It's "warmed up" to -6, and -21 W/C.
