DUmmies Discuss Coon Hunters
« on: January 05, 2011, 01:07:03 PM »
This is a funny thread, wherein the DUmbasses debate the meaning of the word "coon".  It reminded me of the firestorm a few years ago when the mayor of Washington, D.C., a post reserved for mental giants, fired someone on his staff for properly using the term "niggardly" in a discussion. It is hard to imagine how long the list of banned words might be when the democrat DUmbasses are finished sterilizing the language.

SC 'Coon Hunter' License Plate Not Offensive, Says Raccoon Hunter
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/01/sc_co...

To some, the word "coon" is most recognizable as a racial slur. Yet as South Carolina considers issuing specialty plates with "Coon Hunters" written on them, the president of a raccoon hunting organization there says the term is hardly offensive.

"Coon is a word that's in the dictionary," David McKee, president of the South Carolina Coon Hunters Association told TPM. "There are national publications about coon hunting."

True, the dictionary does define coon primarily as an abbreviation for nature's mischievous bandits. Yet the online version of Merriam-Webster notes the common derogatory connotation as well. The site defines coon like this:

1: raccoon 2: usually offensive : black

SC Reps Propose 'Coon Hunters' And 'Don't Tread On Me' License Plates
Jon Terbush | January 4, 2011, 8:39AM

Forget bumper stickers. South Carolina drivers may soon have a new way to make a political statement while tooling around town in their cars. As Corey Hutchins reported in the Columbia Free-Times, several lawmakers in the South Carolina State House recently introduced bills that would allow the DMV to issue over a dozen new specialty plates, including one with the Gadsden Flag slogan turned Tea Party rallying cry, "Don't Tread On Me." Among the other proposed plates are ones bearing the words "Coon Hunters" and "Second Amendment" for firearm fans, or, if fishing is more your thing, one with an image of a largemouth bass.

While the "Coon Hunters" plate may raise some eyebrows for its apparent use of a racial slur, it's apparently meant to celebrate raccoon hunting. Revenue from sales of the plate would go toward the South Carolina State Coon Hunters Association Youth Fund.

That group's website states:
The SC State CHA was established in 1982 to promote the sport of coonhunting in our state...We work constantly with members of our General Assembly to insure that our hunting privileges are not infringed upon. <sure it is ..>

None of the state reps sponsoring these proposals responded to TPM's request for comment. Neither did the raccoon hunting organization.

13. Wow.
It would never have occurred to me that "coon hunter" could be construed as a racial slur but I'm from the far north. If in South Carolina, racial slur is the first thing that comes to mind then how can the CHA possibly excuse themselves? No doubt they're balking at the enforced political correctness which does get old at times but serves a very real purpose.

25. Jeez, I just used that word this morning when addressing my cats
"Have those 'coons been tearing up our yard again? Do your job and stop them!"

IMO the apostrophe is the key. With that, there is no ambiguity about what the word is referring to.

DUmmies love their apostrophes. The insert one into every plural noun.

we called raccoons "raccoons". The word "coon" was always understood to be a derogatory name for African-Americans, except if it preceded '-skin cap' or 'hound' and so I never used it. My mother, who was rarely bothered by anything, didn't like using the word "coon" at all and would actually say 'raccoon-skin cap'. Good friends of mine have a purebred Coonhound, and I confess that I had a bit of a hard time using the word when telling my little girl that Ms Debby and Ms Suzanne's dog, Beaudreaux, was a Coonhound when she asked what he was.

Nail meet hammer.

My first thoughts at the sight of the title was, "Humm, I guess they are outraged about the barbaric practice of coon hunting." (not that I find it barbaric)

Can't be helped sometimes.   I ran next door to deliver something and my neighbor had 5-6 woman in the kitchen playing cards. I was invited to join and asked what the game was, they said SPADES  .I looked at the black woman and had to get the hell out of there as I had heard that term used before.  What a strange life when words not heard in years come back to stun you.

Mother tells me that she was embarrassed when I was 3 years old and in a restaurant looked out the window of a restaurant that had black servers and yelled Mommy, look at all the Crows on the lawn.

Do I get upset when called a Honkey, Cracker, Damn Yankee,   Hell no, I did as a kid hate it when the French Canadians were called Frogs but I freaking grew up and laugh at that. Frenchie has made me laugh for years-----anyone remember the Polish jokes about how to tell the groom at a polish wedding--he was the one wearing the bowling shirt.

Why not, most of us small town Yankees had never seen a Black unless we went out of state.

Same as most people in Italy seldom crossed paths with a Irishman.  How many Russians at that time ran into a person from Jamaica, Germans seldom met anyone from Kenya.

Way back then meeting someone from another country was like meeting someone from Mars.  We have our preconceptions on these strangers from word of mouth or government propergander.

I had relatives that lived in Tracy Minn. (Think Little House on the Prairie area) and they had a *GASP* Black family move into town. Their house became a local tourist attraction. People would honestly to God go out of their way to drive by hoping to see them. Then if there was a sighting the phones burnt up. We Floridians LOAO at them.

Just a few years ago, people laughed out loud at ridiculous words like "spokesperson" and "chairperson". But "niggardly" is still a perfectly good word among people with IQs of at least the high double digits.
