What would you do with $330 Million?
« on: January 04, 2011, 12:26:34 PM »
The Mega Millions jackpot is at an estimated $330 million for tonight's drawing.

I'm driving over to Bullhead City, AZ to get some tickets after lunch since Nevada doesn't have a state lottery.  I can't remember the last time I bought lottery tickets, but it would have been for a huge jackpot like tonight.  After lunch is nap time for the baby, so she will get a nice little nap in the car today.  She will love it.  And we will get to see some pretty scenery on the way to Arizona.  It's about an hour and a half away.  We just got some snow yesterday and I hope some is still left on the mountains.

Good luck to all of you who are going to buy tickets!

If I disappear, it's because I won and I am attaining a new idenity so my "new" cousins do not find me.

You're right about the fact that you would have to move away.

I would do pretty much what you suggested: disappear.  I'd also consult with lawyers and not tell a soul for a while.

But soon you would have to tell....it's one of the requirements for winning.

I think I may pick up a ticket or two this evening. :whistling:

What would I do?  Buy a house with a large garage, a bunch of tools, and a couple old jalopies to play with.

If I won that much, I'd set up a slush fund for family but they would have to go through a lawyer to apply.  That would be after an initial gift to everyone.

What thundley said . . . plus, I'd have to get a place in the Adirondacks . . . and somewhere near the Gulf Coast in Texas.

I'd also do something with my church--we're a fairly well-off parish, and we support a soup kitchen in one of the cities near (north of) Albany.  That'd be one fine soup kitchen after I got done with it.  And that's for starters.  We support Haitian missionaries, too.

Well, even with half going to taxes, that still leaves a nice pile to play with.

In order:

1.  Immediately retire. Again. Encourage Mrs E to retire. For the first time.
2.  Pay off all bills, Sell the house for whatever I can get for it and move to where IT'S WARM(ER). Pay cash for the custom-built home whose plans I have squirrelled away.
3.  Contact a lawyer and set up conditional trust funds for family members who are younger than 21. They get paid after they've accomplished certain "things" which are to be named. Family members older than 21 have to jump through hoops too, but those are to be determined also.
4.  Get a lot of advice on how to invest it, set up foundations, etc. Let the money work for itself.
5.  Set up a charitable gift to the tune of $50K per year for my church.
6.  Gotta trade in the cars - they each have ~160K miles on 'em.
7.  Buy a Shires bass trombone, and $150,000 in brass band instruments and percussion. I'll start my own ******* band. Another $10,000 for sheet music.
8.  Buy Thor a new truck. He needs it.

Well, I'd definitely buy a huge mansion somewhere in the north of Canada, and build a giant, colosseum-sized underground amphitheater beneath it with portcullises all around, from which, at the touch of a button, I can release ravenous, 12- to 14-foot Komodo dragons to tear apart DUmmies that Mr. SB's minions have captured. Naturally, you'd all be invited to the party (to the bullet-proof glassed-in viewing sections above the amphitheater, no worries mates).

I'd invest in an island, build an idyllic little home on it and lay in some heavy weapons.

330 Million? Holy crap.

I'd invest about 95% of it and use the other stuff for some basic things I need such as a house and possibly a small African country.

What would I do with $330 million? I can think of a few things...

    My first standing back flip.

Pay my parents' leftover medical bills.

Buy my father a new car.

Pay back the in-laws for the wonderful financial help they've given to us.

Give out some to family; pay off a few mortgages, start a few college funds (especially one for our son), just throw it around a little.

Build our own house (well, have it built, specifically).

Buy a few nice AR-15 setups and some SHTF items (and those new hunting boots, too).

Donate some to a few area churches and buy ours a whole mess of nice things they could really use.

    Learn about investing and invest.

A new Dodge Durango, maybe a four-door RAM to go with it.

    My own laptop.

    Charities will get some, too.

No, I don't think about this one too much :D

Nothing all that dramatic.  After all, it'd be cut to half by asking for cash, and that would be cut to a further 60% by taxes.  Still, I could just do my poor best to try and make do on what was left...
