School District Bans All Sweets

School District Bans All Sweets

Kids of St. Paul, Minn., load up on the cookies now. Because if you’re a student in a public school there, you’re going to have to go without sweets during those many long hours you’re on school grounds.

All public schools in the St. Paul school district will be, by the school year’s end, sweet-free zones. That means no more cookies, cinnamon rolls or cakes for dessert with school lunches. Little Debbie’s snack cakes will be confiscated from home lunches. And concessions for school fundraisers can’t include hot chocolate or brownies.

No birthday cupcakes.

The St. Paul school district’s ban on sweets is an effort to live up to a wellness policy that parents, school administrators and teachers agreed on — but didn’t really act on — four years ago. It’s an effort to fight child obesity but also to get the district ready for the Child Nutrition Act, signed recently by President Obama, which could impose stricter rules on schools than simple soda bans.

The ban, which also includes fat- and salt-laden snack foods, isn’t expected to dramatically lower the districts 40 percent obesity rate. But it’s an effort, administrators say, to begin doing things differently. Teachers will come up with new ways to reward students other than with pizza coupons. Parents will have to find something other than cupcakes to bring in for a birthday celebration.

Confiscating Little Debbie snacks? No more birthday cupcakes? What kind of BS is this?

The world must be ending because I apparently agree with psycho Sarah.

I bet Queen Michelle would approve of this.

on this policy. How is that a 'Nanny State'? At worst it is a Self-Nanny State.

Maybe it's because no one thought the district would go that far?

While you're at it, make sure you ban fruits and fruit juices too...you know how many grams of sugar/carbs are in 12 ounces of orange juice?

They need to ban anything that contains a calorie. It takes a village to starve a child.

All fruits and vegetables contain sugar. Since it has nothing to do with obesity or nutrition, they should specify that the ban only affects those foods that are criticized by democrat food nazis.

More busy work for our educators to fritter away the day instead of teaching our children.

I assume there will be a ZERO TOLERANCE for this crime and the little kiddies that dare to bring sugar to school will be expelled.

That is true.
What are they going to do? Hand out a list to the parents for foods that are allowed and foods that aren't allowed?!

A few days ago, when San Fran (or the equivalent) banned the plastic grocery bag, the DUmmies were all atwitter, rejoicing.  One of the posters said "This is dumb.  This gives liberals a bad name."  They jumped all over him with both feet.

I rowed over for a few secs.  WarrenStupidity and rainy are all for this, and rainy even spammed 124 reasons that refined sugar is bad for you, which I did not read, and would delete if I were a mod.  Most of the others think this is overreach.

As the parent of an underweight kid (almost 4 and not even 30 pounds,) I would happily send my kid to school with foods that would make the no-no list: whole chocolate milk, PB&J, Oreos, Goldfish. And when they tried to tell me my kid couldn't eat it, I'd come back with a doctors note that said my underweight kid can eat anything I damn well pack in her lunch.

In the late 60's when I was in grade school, we only gave them to the ones we wanted.  boys never gave them to boys and girls never gave them to girls.

Nope.  That loser tag belongs more properly to the lunatic parents of the poor kid bringing in birthday carrots or the like. :cheers1:

These are also the kids that after 13 years in moonbat indoctrination (aka: publik skoool) and 18 years of moonbat brainwashing from their unbathed hippy-dippy parents, either go on a killing spree and wind up permanent wards of the state, require $250,000 of intense psychological counselling before they're capable of leading anything remotely resembling a normal life by the time they're out of college (with their BA in Womyn's Studies), or they find sanity, join a branch of the service, and the highly trained and efficient drill instruction cadre gets their head pulled out of their colon, points them in the right direction, and salvages a functional human being from the liberal insanity at a fraction of the price of life counsellors and psychiatrists for the next 20 years.

Yeah, and the people I liked best got the good ones.  I don't remember having to give one to everyone, I seem to recall my Mom telling me it was the proper thing to do.  :thatsright:

What's so stupid about banning sweets, is that some foods that will be allowed are worse than some of the "sweets". I had never paid much attention to the amount of carbs in different foods, until I went on this diet back in July (40lbs gone  :yahoo: ). I had only paid attention to calories and sodium. I was really surprised at the things I was told to not eat.

Any fruit. Bananas, apples and grapes are FULL of carbs!!! Unsweetened apple juice has 30g of carbs in 8ounces

No pastas, potatoes, or beans.

No cereals.

No catsup, bar-b-que sauce.

No MILK! in 2% milk there are 11.7g in 8ounces.

No peas, corn, cooked carrots.

As most people know, with the exception of this school district!, carbs transform in the body into 'gasp!' SUGAR!!!!

What do they think they have been feeding these kids in the school lunch room? CARBS!! Cheapest foods - pastas, potatoes, peas, corn, carrots, apples and bananas...are all high in carbs.

And they are worried about a kid having a Little Debbie cake in their lunch brought from home? I'd say the kids that are eating lunch brought from home, even with a snack cake, are probably eating healthier than the kids getting the "healthy lunch" prepared by the school!!

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

"My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far I've finished two bags of M&M's and a chocolate cake. I feel better already." – Dave Barry

A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.
