Apparently you missed the point as well.
I don't think if fair to say that because she didn't/doesn't believe in God or organized religion, that she is getting what she deserves. There are conservatives who are atheists or agnostics. If you paint this woman with the brush of her getting what she deserves because she is an atheist, then you have to use the same brush on conservatives. If you are going to hold to The Constitution that people have a right to worship as they wish, you can't pick and chose who gets the right, based on their political beliefs.
You missed the entire point.
No where in my post did I ever state that people could not worship the way they wish, that she got what she deserved for not believing in organized religion, nor was I abrogating the Constitutional rights of anyone.
I think you misunderstood me when I said what I did about the Constitutional rights regarding religion, and I probably should not have used the pronoun "you" as
you took it to mean that you - personally - were denying religious rights to people. I meant that because of the our Constituion, any American has the right to believe in who or what they wish, God, Bhudda, Allah, or not believe....and those beliefs - or not beliefs...are not exclusive to either conservatives or liberals.
I did interpret your post to mean that you felt that she lost her child and went crazy nuts
because she was a liberal and
because she did not believe in God.
In addition, I made a point that I have no pity for anyone who willfully creates their own Hell on Earth and is too blind to see it.
When a person goes "off the deep end"....I don't think they are capable of seeing what they are doing or have done. I don't think it's a question of being "too blind to see it"...they are too ill too see it.
Have you ever had someone you are close to, that's an alcoholic? I have, and I know there are also a few members here that are recovering alcoholics. I can tell you, and I'm sure they could also, it's impossible to
make an alcoholic see that they are headed for a cliff. They don't want to see that cliff, they don't even care that the cliff is there. All anyone can do is try to help them -
when they fall off the cliff or if they suddenly see the cliff approaching and ASK for help before they go off of it. Until an alcoholic or drug addict wants to help themselves, no one else can help them. A mentally ill person is often not capable of even recognizing they need help.
With the current mental health laws, a friend or family member cannot do
anything to help an individual - 18yo or older - unless that person is a danger to themself or society. Sadly, most police or mental health providers will not even respond to a call for help from a friend or family member
until AFTER the individual has caused harm to themself or another. A family member - one who has legal guardianship - can only commit a child under the age of 17. 18 AND OLDER MUST COMMIT THEMSELF FOR TREATMENT.....they must be capable of signing the dotted line themself BEFORE entering a treatment facility.
The only authority who can commit an individual 18 and older, without the individual's written acceptance.....is the court system by judicial order.
