SNOW.....a day late.
« on: December 26, 2010, 05:58:13 AM »
We got about 3" of fluffy wet snow last night. No wind so it has stacked up on the tree limbs and power lines....makes for a beautiful landscape. No one has been out yet but I'm about to put tracks in it....going to the store to BS with the guys.

7 am. and still coming down. Shame it didn't come a day earlier.

We got snow on Christmas Eve and all day yesterday... it's probably frozen into a solid block of ice by now.  I really don't want to drive anywhere tomorrow.

It was snowing when we got up yesterday, and I don't think it stopped all day, mostly it melted.

It then all turned to ice, and we have about 2 inches or so of the fluffier stuff on top. Supposed to snow all day intermittently....at least a couple more inches are predicted. It keeps changing. Going to be in high 50's by Thursday! :lmao:

It's not the snow that's such a problem, but the ice under it. We're on one of those advisories ...officers will not respond to accidents unless injury occurs.....stay home and avoid all unnecessary travel.

We had planned to go to 7:30 Mass this morning...but I can't find a decent list on internet of chuch closings. They are different at each source. May try to hit a later one, but I think God will understand today.

This stuff is going to play havoc with the after Christmas sales ....saw a couple ad for places that were opening at 5am!  :thatsright:
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Likewise here, got snow yesterday.  For awhile it stayed on ground, then melted then came the flurries mixed with rain that came down off and on all day.  Below freezing last night, so this retired old fart is just going to drink another cup of coffee and throw another log on the fire and watch the world go by today.

Talked to Scoobie this morning, they have 6 on the ground now, another 6 expected.

We are forecast to get it starting late this afternoon.  12-18 inches by the time all is said and done, as much as 2 feet in localized spots.

And oh yeah--45 mph winds.  Joy.

10:45 and a light snow still falling but now they're warning of high winds later....the roads aren't bad so we're good.

Looks like we might have a couple of inches or so on the ground.  Roads are good and the sun is shining now; it's beautiful!

We had to leave the NC Triangle yesterday to beat the impending storm there.  Glad we did.  Drove through some wet snow and mostly rain on 85, but the snow really started coming down when we climbed the hill on 17 from Toccoa.

12+ inches of snow and counting so far here on the Eastern Shore of Va (where, btw, there is no such thing as a Snow Plow). Winds gusting right now at 40+ mph. Have done three complete rounds of shovelling so far today, driveway, sidewalk, and porch steps, and am about ready to get started on number four. I no sooner get done, and there's already an inch where I've shoveled. Blizzard warnings have been up since noon today, and snow/wind is expected until the very early morning hours tomorrow.

Sending all this mess your way, Sparky and formerlurker. Hope you have as much fun with it as I am having.

Tots....I hope she got there safely. I was out on the roads this morning, and while bad, they were still driveable. Now, not so much. Blizzard conditions and whiteout driving as of about 2pm this afternoon.

Love your house, Scoobie!!

We went to 9am Mass, and the side roads were really slippery. They were getting better when we got out, but people were still slip sliding all over the place. Dumb asses don't realize that you can't follow right behind another car and still drive the speed limit on a snow/ice covered road!!

It's snowed on and off all day, but surprisingly it has melted when hitting the street and driveway....especially since it's about 26 out there!

Saw in our local paper this morning, that Newark cancelled 250 flights late yesterday for last night and this morning!! What a mess that's going to be!

Talked to a dear friend this afternoon. They weren't able to come to Christmas Eve, because her grandson surprised her by coming in from Afghanistan Christmas Eve night!! He brought 2 buddies with him...who couldn't get to their destinations. God Bless them!

Y'all take care up north....stay off the roads, inside where it's warm....and hire a neighbor's kid to shovel your walks!!!

If he left early, he might have gotten ahead of it.

If not, he's gonna be stuck here until I dunno, February or so.

I think they were headed south - Atlanta, Birmingham? - on their way home, but I don't think they were leaving Va until today. Even so, I read where Raleigh got 6 or 8 inches.... :(

Just started snowing again....

A little over a foot of snow right now, another 5" predicted overnight. Yay.  :censored:

Just got done my fourth and final round of snow shoveling for the day. Such fun shoveling metric ****tons of snow in the dark, the wind blowing everything on the shovel back in my face, me covered in snow, shivering, the icicles hanging from my hair constantly threatening to pierce my eyes out with each wind gust...my neighbor has a lit nativity scene in their yard...I swear I heard the baby Jesus laughing at me.

Northeastern North Carolina has gotten a whole bunch of snow (for us anyway).  Walked outside and stuck a ruler down through it.  We had 8.5 inches about 2 this afternoon, but it has continued snowing and is expected to continue until about 2 am, according to the weather service.  Fun Stuff!  Kids are having a blast, the dog loves it, and I have no reason to leave home until they get the roads cleared.

I tried to get my best friend's husband to bring his plow down from Chicago, but he refused.  :(

Sorry Scoobs....but I laughed out loud reading this part! I read the nativity in the yard, and expected to read it had blown into your yard...not that Baby Jesus was laughing at you!  :lmao:

We're just outside of Surry, VA, on the James River......got over a foot, with eighteen inches expected forty knot winds,, everything shut down, even the ferry, all the supermarkets and gas stations in Williamsburg......it's a ghost town......and not a snowplow in sight.  This is one of those times when having a four-wheel drive pays off.......

8-10 inches in the Boston area so far.  Only about 3-4 here so far, but we're about 4 hours behind them as far as storm movement.  Boston and Portland area stations are talking about totals in excess of 20 inches, and winds tonight gusting as high as 60-70 mph.

Only essential personnel (ops, radcon, chemistry, security) going into plant tomorrow.  Called the hotline a couple of hours ago, and just got a call/heads up from one of the supervisors a few minutes ago.  Snow should taper off by noon tomorrow, but the wind will be around until Tuesday.  Lows tonight and tomorrow in the single digits and windchills in the negative teens.

I'm glad you don't have to go in, kiddo. Nasty here, but gonna be WAY nastier up there.

Of course you DO have a snowblower...imagine trying to shovel your driveway (which isn't too much longer than mine) 3-4 times. Now you know why I was begging for your flexeril and an hour or three in your spare shower.

Hope you're planning to sit tight for another day or two Doc...it will take at least that before you see a snowplow. The roads are treacherous.

Ops--operations.  Radcon--radiological controls/radiation protection.

I'm electrical maintenance.  Specifically a relay technician.  Nothing happening that they need me for unless some vital piece of electrical equipment breaks.

Just checked weather websites, including NOAA.  Our nasty period will be around 2-8 am.  No way in HELL I'm going out unless I have to.

And Scoobs, your driveway is about 1/3 the length of mine, but yeah, I'd rather have a snowblower than shovel 200 feet of driveway of 18 inches of heavy drifting snow.

That line is worthy of several high-5's.

I love the Boston and Portland stations.  It's like the inside anchors are laughing their asses off at the poor bastards "in the field" giving the reports.  It's like they're saying, "Which asshole can we shove out there this time?"
