Washington (CNN) -- The federal government unveiled new proposed regulations Wednesday mandating "bolder health warnings" on cigarette advertisements and packages, according to a news release from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The proposed requirements, characterized as the biggest change in tobacco health warnings in 25 years, include "nine new larger and more noticeable textual warning statements and color graphic images depicting the negative health consequences of smoking," the release stated.

This really pisses me off. What gives them the right? Why would they do this?!?

This is EXACTLY the reason I hate a leftist/prohibitionist. If you like something, they can snatch it away. No explanation needed, but if THEY like it, you must ask no questions. It's a good thing. After all....THEY know what's best, right?

I've an idea. Why don't we just put an Islamic terrorist on the front of Camel packs all around the nation. See how much damn support that gets.

Just more stupid crap.  If anything, it will only make smoking cooler to teenagers who already think they're bulletproof and going to live forever.

My point starts at about 1:00. Who freakin' knew a bit done 17 years ago would be AMPLIFIED!! I believe he also touched on this smoking issue at the beginning of the act.

Someone on another forum spoke up and said that some bright entrepeneur would make a bundle selling attractive, sexy cigarette cases.  They used to be in style, they'll come back in again.

At the same time they doing this stupid crap in an attempt to get people to quit smoking, they are talking about banning the e-cigarette, which has actually helped a lot of people quit smoking.  I'm not sure how many but I think it is in the tens of thousands.

Karin, I don't have any links, but a buddy of mine who uses them, mentioned the same thing.  She said something about the FDA and ALA wanting to ban them.  But I hadn't heard anything else.

Nevermind, don't need a link, there's an ecig forum.  NYS assembly has already passed the ban, we have to focus on the senators now.  Many of whose elections are still up in the air.

These mother****ers just want the taxes that come from a $15 pack of real ones.

Thanks for the link, Duke.  Looks like the battle has been heating and waging for awhile.  It never hit my radar screen until I started using them.  I wrote this to my newly elected state senator-R:

Dear Ms. Ritchie,
Congratulations, and I voted for you.  I hope you listen to us as we New Yorkers fight to get out from under the thumb of state government and arrogant Assemblymen.
I am urging you to not support A9529, which prohibits the sale of electronic vaporing devices, commonly used as a substitute for cigarettes.  As they contain the same amount of nicotine as Nicorderm patches (legal) and are not sold to minors, I find this government overreach and intrusion unaccepatable and intolerable.

Many people feel the Assemblymen are doing this to force people back to regular, deadly cigarettes, in order to extract the criminally high taxes. This is so outrageously immoral I can't believe it.

Why does the government have to insert itself into every aspect of our lives?  Maybe if they stopped acting as nanny, we could balance the NY budget.

Thank you for listening.

FDA is playing the ol' political game.

They don't have the cajones to outright ban cigarettes (due to all those wonderful taxes that are collected), and they absolutely can't stand a device that keeps the ol' government in tax receipts, so they whitewash the problem and put more stupid warnings on cigarette packs.

Like that is really going to dissuade someone from smoking.  :whatever:

FDA, like all government bureaucracies, is subject to politics and cronyism.

That is all.

I smoked for a couple of decades and finally quit in 2003.
There was not one day I didn`t know or understand how bad they were for me.
You don`t need a package to tell you that...what a waste of tax dollars to be coming up with this stuff given our current fiscal issues.
