According to this AP article, 41% of kids born in the US in 2008 were born to unmarried mothers.

Is that number surprisingly high--almost astonishingly high-- to anyone else? Do you think that's a reasonable figure, or something unhealthy for the kids and for our society?

Perhaps I'm naive, but I would have thought that the overall rate would have been around 20% at most.

The article is mostly about the struggles of black mothers and black children, of whom 72% are born to unmarried mothers. The numbers are apparently 53% of Hispanics, 29% of whites, and 17% of Asians.

Is this something that needs to be addressed (it seems so to me), and if so, what can be done about it?

It's individual choice. Nothing can be legislated about it without infringing on basic freedoms.

It's a conservative position that it is directly responsible for the ills of society. Yet there may not be much support for that other than conservatives' prejudices.

but both can contribute to joblessness, lack of education and poverty

Yanow what DUmmie?  A high majority of those dropouts come from single parent homes.

What does this say about the social fabric of America?

I think there's a close association between single mothers
and poverty.

Duh, ya think?  The social fabric of this country has been on the decline since the 60's when the liberal , do what feels good movement started. Welfare also aided greatly in the decline. It lead to less dependence on the family and greater dependence on the government.

This is why monogamous, hetero marriage was instituted; because it's absence or variation was not as successful a social construct. One need not be a Christian to see this but one must shed their anti-Christian spite.

Destruction of the monogamous, hetero family will do more harm to society than the distribution of toys in half-portioned meals.

If you're unmarried and have a baby, the government will pay for it. If you are married or get married and have a baby...you owe for it.

This all goes back to LBJ's great society, they wanted to force Husband's out of the picture and the Government became the new Husband, they purposely wanted to destroy the black family for their own gains, and of course it spread outside of the black family, they probably think it's a bonus when it's actually a genocide of the American family.

Why get married?

Well, I happen to love the woman I made the baby with . . . so that's why we got married . . . six years before The Heiress was born. 

ETA:  The reason was given for any lurking DUmb****s.  I know that y'all here feel pretty much the same way.

Progressive ideas fail only because they are always (1)underfunded and a few government employees short of what is required to make them a (2)success.

(1)underfunded: You have $2 left in your pocket.
(2)success: The ability to suck excess dimes from the taxpayers.
