GRAND RAPIDS -- The state attorney general's office has prosecuted thousands of parents for failing to pay child support, but none of those has been as "outrageous" as the claims -- and children -- piling up for Howard Veal.

The Muskegon man has fathered 23 children with 14 women, and is more than $533,000 in arrears in his child-support payments, according to the attorney general's office, which has been pushing a case against Veal -- tied to two of those children -- in Kent County Circuit Court. ...

Of the 14 women who gave birth to Veal's children, all but one are current or former recipients of public assistance, according to the state.

Sounds like he has been doing some real winners.

Wonder if anyone ever explained to him that he could also keep track of his conquests by notching his bedpost.

  • Oh snap!
Why doesn't he just go on Maury and make some money to pay the child support?  He sounds like a perfect candidate for the show.

In all essence of the matter, it is imprisonment for indebtedness.... against one of the very tenets that this country was founded on. Should he have sired all of those children?? Probably not. Putting him in prison isn't the answer, IMO.

I was going to say something very similar.

Funny that the government is allowed to imprison people that owe IT money.

Putting the dude in prison isn't going to help anyone get their money - It'll just piss away more taxbucks keeping a non-serious offender in a State or Federal holliday camp.

  • Oh well, I wasn't using my civil liberties anyway.
That has been one of my beefs with the child support laws.  Putting someone in jail for not paying child support doesn't get any more support out there.  This plan really needs to be revisited.

Works for me.  I have no problem with that.  I actually know women that don't turn in their deadbeat dads, because being in jail would provide no support, vs. the minute amount they get, when the man does have a job.

He was most likely jailed for contempt of court and not indebtedness.

Cute way to get around the "debtors prison" label.

I agree. I do not have any idea how the situation should be fixed though.

At least if he is in prison he ain't out there making more babies that the taxpayers are supporting.  :fuelfire:

I am not necessarily opposed to mandatory sterilization.  And a work program.   :fuelfire:

ETA:  The sterilization comment should be addressed to any parent, either sex that fails to provide for the children they bring into the world.  Not just dads that don't pay child support.

In his case, it actually makes sense, it means there are 13 or 14 more kids the State won't have to pick up the tab for.  As long as he doesn't get conjugal visits, anyway.

It's pretty close to imprisonment for debt, the difference is that imprisonment in these cases boils down to a form of contempt for not even trying to pay.  Not very satisfactory, really.

Another added benefit of being imprisoned, well, at least theoretically, is that he can't father any more children while in the slammer. But that doesn't mean he won't have sex.  :evillaugh:  I'm sure Bubba would be perfectly fine with making Veal his little bitch.

All kinds of arguments were made about the jail time thing. Most of them were just plain stupid.

From the article:

Quote
But the judge was unmoved. He said Veal's behavior warranted prison time because he was unlikely to ever make a substantial dent in what he owes.

At some point in the game, the sham that Veal played ever since he pleaded guilty back in July for owing $60K to the kids of ONE of the 14 women he'd knocked up, has to run its course.

You don't play by the rules? Or pay money you owe? You lose your freedom. Simple as that.

Oh, by the way - Veal was collecting unemployment. I guess that means once in the slammer, the unemployment benefits stop, right?   :lmao:

The guy is 44 and has 23 kids?!  WTF!?!?  I supposed the left supports him and his procreation but God forbid you mention the Duggar family.  Instead of putting him in jail put him to work on a road crew 12 hour days 6 days a week, and take away his nuts.
