Cough-Syrup Abuse by Kids May Draw FDA Restrictions for Pfizer, J&J Drugs

Pfizer Inc.’s Robitussin and Johnson & Johnson Tylenol Cough may be reviewed for possible U.S. dispensing restrictions because of increasing signs of abuse and injuries among adolescents.

Non-medical use of dextromethorphan, a common cough suppressant approved since 1958, accounted for an estimated 7,988 emergency room visits in 2008, up from 4,634 in 2004, according to a U.S. government report yesterday. A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel will meet Sept. 14 to discuss whether the medicine should be a controlled substance.

Drugmakers have tried since 2006 to educate parents and teachers about dextromethorphan abuse, often referred to as “robo-tripping” or “skittling.” The FDA is collecting data on the scope of the problem in response to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s call for a recommendation on new restrictions.

“Because of the drug’s perceived safety, ease of availability, and desired psychoactive effects, it is sought after by those seeking to alter their mental state or to get ‘high,’” FDA staff said in the report. “Therefore, routine labeling changes or product packaging redesign will probably not reduce the present abuse trend.”

Dextromethorphan is in many nonprescription combination cold drugs, including Robitussin Cough & Chest Congestion from New York-based Pfizer; Tylenol Cough & Sore Throat from New Brunswick, New Jersey-based J&J; and Vicks NyQuil Cough from Cincinnati-based P&G. It is also sold as a single ingredient called Delsym by Berkshire, United Kingdom-based Reckitt Benckiser Group.

The Gov imposed rules on purchasing sinus meds in order to combat the meth manufacturing problem. We all see how effective that has been.  :whatever: Kids are going to do what kids are going to do. If not dextromethorphan, then it will be something else.

Saw this on Fox this morning.

The doctor who was talking about it, said that kids these days, are trying just about anything to get "high". He said they are trying stuff, that most people would even think about trying.

He also said that some of the cough syrups - Nyquil...was the example he used - also had some of the same ingredient (can't remember what it was  :thatsright: ) that is in Tylenol, and these kids are also ending up with permanent liver damage, because they will drink several bottles at one time.  :o

I take Robitussin or Delsym(when I can find it) for bronchitis....they are the only ones that work that I can take because I'm allergic to codeine....I'll be up a creek without a paddle if the amount gets limited, because of some dumb-ass teenagers wanting to get high.  :banghead:

When my son was in 7th or 8th grade....one of his teacher's put on her students' school supply list, at the beginning of the year....white out paper correction pens.

I bought one, put it in his stuff...didn't think anything about it.

A random locker search was done about a month or so later.....T's was searched. I got a phone call from the school. I needed to get out there because a white out pen had been found in his locker, and they were against school policy. There was dead silence on the phone, when I told the school secretary how it happened to be in his locker.

All the pens were confiscated, and letters of explanation went home from the school. No apology though.  ::)

Back when I was in high school, kids would "sniff" some "air freshener" called Rush or something.

Sounds like my dog, except she does work as a watchdog.  Cats are the true liberals of pets.

Yup, mine stands by the door, and then paces back and forth, from me to the door.  He hasn't realized I keep different hours on the weekend.

Addiction is a serious problem, but restricting cough syrup is not the right way to approach it. Cough syrup abuse is often glorified in the Hip-Hop Culture, which is known as "robo tripping".
