Any homeless people on DU?

I'm just curious. Just wondering how this is possible in this day and age.

Not trying to start anything, just genuinely curious and would like to get more info on this...

1) Are you homeless by choice?
2) What is "homeless"? Literally sleeping on the streets or do you have a place to stay?
3) Is it an economic reason?
4) Do you have a job/career?
5) If not, are you looking? Any leads or anything?
6) Any marketable skills?
7) Any substance abuse?
8) Are there any programs in the US to help the homeless get on their feet?
9) Is there no welfare in the US?
10) If you are on welfare/social assistance is it enough to become not homeless?
11) Is there an aspect of mental health involved?

I just can't understand how this can happen in the richest country in the world.

27. homeless

I am not homeless but have just taken in a young couple with a
small child.
They showed up on my doorstep with no place to go. Wife is an
ex-girlfriend of one of my sons.
They do get welfare but only 400 a month.
Where can you go and get a home with only 400 in cash a
month.
The child is from a previous relationship.
So they need to get a DNA test in order to get about 170 more
a month.
The place they need to go for that is over 60 miles away.
Husbands license was taken away due to him having seizures.
He had some bad ones and has some weakness on his left side.
Was in a wheelchair but is now on a cane.
In addition to less money until DNA test they also took wife
off medi-cal, low income medical help.
Which means no birth control so she will probably get
pregnant again.
They have moved from friend to friend. So when they showed up
here their only choice was to sleep in the field.( We live in
the desert.) Which they have had to do several times. One
time because the place they were staying was not safe
anymore. Owner of house beat up another friend staying with
him, so in the middle of the night they left in fear for
their safety.
His parents are meth addicts and her mother is just plain
cruel. Her mother actually left them stranded and refused to
let them stay with her. They hitchhiked to my house. The last
place they were staying had no running water. Five years ago
this young mother, she is now 28, lost a 2 year old and a 7
month old in a house fire at her moms. The 2 year old never
made it out of the house and the 7 month old had severe burns
and died 4 months later. The fire dept had no explanation for
the fire. The youngest ones birthday was just the other day
Aug 26. She is still devastated by her loss. She has to
relive it all at least 4 times a year. Once for each of their
birthdays and again for each of their deaths. She has had no
permanent place to live so we have kept her babies ashes for
her for the last 5 years.
They were waiting for low income housing, but the waiting
list was too long.
Several months after the kids died they were finally approved
for low income housing.
But by then no kids no house. Another nice thing the welfare
dept did was to cut her off when she failed to make an
appointment because she was several hundred miles away
staying with the youngest at the Shriners hosp in Sacramento.
Even though they had been informed about the injury to the
child.
So they are here but it can only be temporary.
My husband and I are on a fixed income and have only a 400
sq. ft cabin.
They have tried everything to get a home but with so little
money their chances are pretty slim.
Hope this all makes sense, I had to say something when I saw
this post. They believe in a God.
I do not. Where are all the faithful at a time like this...

Uh -- seriously?   the 28 year old woman can't work because????????  Bueller....... Bueller.....

Mole trying to build street cred.  $400/month welfare?  Wife AND kid?  Hell, the WIC vouchers are more than that.

400 sq ft cabin? ...that's 20x20...just so happens my den is 20x20...and with all the junk in it, there's barely room for the three of us, let alone 5 living in it.

Awww!  It's so cute how they ban people so quickly.

Any hint that there might be some personal responsibility involved in one's life situation brings out the Ban Hammer.
