If you had posted the same thing, knowing the line of work you are in, I would have posted in support of your feelings. Many others would have as well.

Although the internets aren't real life, people do get to 'know' each other via PM or emails or phone calls and when I see something posted by someone I've grown fond of that doesn't 'jell', I tend to give them a pass.

I think most people do. People can't be expected to always have 'up' days. We're not perfect.

It's not much of an ending...

She disappeared into the restroom at the end of the meeting...

A few of us had been discussing what could be done for her...

One lady said she would offer to take her to some shelter.

But I left before she reappeared, so I have no idea what happened.

How did I know her? She was the daughter of one of our neighbors; my daughter was friends with her sister...

I did talk to her a little; I had trouble making sense of what she was saying. And I remembered that many years ago, she'd had some emotional/mental problems, and was under the care of a doctor. It could be that I'm being harsh in saying she's mentally ill... She didn't look right, for sure. Something was off...

I don't mind your asking all these questions...

Too bad this campfire's from 2008; otherwise, I'd nominate the California Piggy primitive for MOST HEARTLESS, INSENSITIVE PRIMITIVE OF THE YEAR.

I think you need to do some real soul-searching - I do. Reminds me of a friend who was a big time protester about just about everything. Then the day came when forced busing of his kid hit his doorstep - all of a sudden all that stuff shouldn't apply to him but to others. It's ok to give lip service but it's time to put up or shut up he showed what a wimp he really was.

While I respect your honesty to admit that - you really need to ask yourself why you felt ashamed and why your first reaction wasn't to make her feel welcome and tend to her needs.

Also, you're not alone. If you were, we still wouldn't have all the problems we do in this country.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for being so blunt, but if a repuke did this everyone would be all over them for being heartless.

That more people feel this way and pretend not to, than do this very public soul searching. Moral hypocrites are everywhere and especially difficult to identify on-line.

When confronted as the OP was with feelings obviously UNACCEPTABLE to her personally, she used a familiar, comfortable medium to vent them out. It takes guts to do that. I don't feel ripping her apart is productive or necessary.

A better response would have been to look up and post local shelters or food banks in a appropriate, courteous manner, share a personal experience where you helped someone in need, share an experience where you felt something similar to the OP and how you coped with it.

I can be rude as hell too, it's a lot easier than thinking things out. With a knee jerk reaction like that, you're part of the problem not the solution.

97. I want to thank all of you for your responses.
   
I am not going to answer each one, unlike my usual habit.

I have done some soul-searching, and I believe I have a much better understanding now of why I behaved the way I did last night.

I called my daughter, but didn't reach her. I will eventually get to talk to her, and see what she knows.

If I encounter the homeless lady again, you can be sure my response will be different...

105. Peggy, listen to this. When my Doug went homeless
   
he had a black book with about 500 phone numbers of friends and associates in this city.

None of those numbers were called and none called to check on him.

A year went by and it's a good thing he was too broke to kill himself with crack or he'd be dead.

But, once a couple of us got the ball rolling, there were so many people who learned from what had happened and who are today more understanding of themselves and of others for that scary episode.

We have to learn somehow, lol. We don't come with handbooks for ourselves or for others.

I love you to death, Peggy. Thanks for being really real.

Still no Nemesis of the Bostonian Drunkard yet, the bobbling primitive.
