What a mess!

I finally decided this morning to use my old fashioned donut maker. First the batter was too thick and they tasted good but didn't look like donuts. While I was trying to work things out, Bill took out the powdered sugar and sprinkled it all over the first ones with his hand getting it all over the place, including the paper towel I was draining them on.

I had to scoop the batter back out of the donut maker and add some more milk. Washed the donut maker and reassembled and refilled. That was the right consistency but they turned out too big and didn't get completely done inside so I had to refry them a little, which made them a tad overdone as it was really hard to keep the non-hydrogenated shortening at an even temp in the cast iron skillet.

Oh, well...that was the first try and I learned things. Will go better the next time.

Please don't suggest a get a deep fryer coz it ain't happening. I don't want another appliance and really want to learn to do this the way it's been done without them.

1. do-nut making is an art

I congratulate you for your efforts! Last year when I made them I used a cast iron dutch oven and had the same problem with done-ness and oil temp. And lordy the house smelled like fry for days.

Are you using a batter?

Really good, consistent doughnuts are nearly impossible without the temperature control of a deep fryer. DUmmy hippywife, in the kitchen of her Okie hovel, with a wood-fired stove and oilcloth-covered table, and DUmmy grasswire, squatting in a tiny apartment over someone's garage up in Wisconsin, have no better chance of making edible doughnuts than poor stupid Beth, on the Coleman campstove in her mother's tiny camping trailer out in the desert. Contrary to popular opinion on this site, gas appliances and pressure cookers are safe, but a deep fryer could actually be dangerous in the hands of a DUmmy. For that reason, we should encourage all DUmmies to have at least two or three deep fryers.

I hear deep frying turkeys is a good starter project.

So...what the **** is wrong with just PATRONIZING a good old AMERICAN establishment such as Krispy Kreme or Dunkin' and just leaving it at that?
In all reality, all of those establishment's doughnuts are just as cheap as making them on your own, taste better, and leave ZERO messy shit to clean up!

****ing DUmmys, they will build an ark to float a bag of weed across a gutter filed with water.

Hippywife's account sounds absolutely disgusting.  Loathsome to attempt to eat, and a big horrible smelly mess.  All to make a "food" item that is nothing but empty calories.   I agree with PatriotGame.  If you have a craving, go toss some business to the experts.   And what is Wild Bill doing, smearing his filthy mitts all over the ingredients?
