Perfume banned in Detroit.

edit: please indicate if you are pro/anti smoking bans in your replies if you like. Thanks

" Three Detroit city buildings will ban workers from wearing perfume, cologne, aftershave lotions and even deodorant.

This comes as a result of a settlement in a federal lawsuit.

In 2008, a city planner filed a lawsuit claiming a co-worker's perfume made it challenging for her to do her job. Susan McBride filed her lawsuit under the American with Disabilities Act, because she said he co-workers' fragrances make it hard for her to breath.

She was awarded $100,000.

"One of the things the city is going to have to figure out is how they enforce the policy they've agreed to," said attorney John Holmquist. "The city is going to have to get involved in hygiene, I'd guess you'd say, which no employer wants to get involved in."

A notice will also go in the new employee handbook and be written in the Americans with Disabilities Act training.."

I give them a month being around sweaty, smelly coworkers before they decide to retract the policy.

1. ...perfume, cologne, aftershave lotions and even deodorant?

This sounds almost as dumb as the bill here in New York to ban all salt from restaurant cooking.
The solution is worse than the problem...

Just the tip of the iceberg.

22. The fact that you don't think it's insane to tell other peopel what they can and can't wear

bothers me a great deal. But hey, it's all about you and your sensative nose. You're a special person and you should be able to dictate what other people around you smell like.

The hardcore liberals demand that no one tell them what they can or cannot wear, but they see nothing wrong with dictating to others what they can or cannot wear.

51. Exactly. People have the right to use and wear what

they want, but that right ends when it physically effects someone else. You do not have endless rights to do whatever you want regardless of the physical effects on others, period. It's mind-bogglingly selfish to think otherwise.

Everything you do physically affects (not "effects," nitwit) other people.  Breathing affects others.  Care to stop breathing?

The infighting continues for dozens and dozens of posts.  It's quite entertaining.

Next, expect people to sue because the the smell of people who don't wear dedorant makes it hard for them to breath.  Or even if they wear scentless dedorant, someone will get a doctor (or several) to testify their patient can still smell it and the fragrance makes it hard for them to breath.

This is an amazing story because I didn't know there were any workers left in Detroit.  Is this just a ploy to drive the few remaining workers out?

These are city employees. They still have tens of thousands of those. You are paying their salaries.

I have to say, for some reason, the spelling is atrocious on this particular thread.

True.  But ask them and the one's who approve of this will tell you that is where the lawsuits ends.  They have no idea they just opened Pandora's Box.  They never do on any of the issues for which they press.  The idea of a slippery slope into unintended consequences doesn't even come into play with them.

Some perfumes bother me a lot, too...fruit scented ones aren't too bad, but many of the flowery ones are horrible.

Everyone knows that we have a little tube from our ears to our throat...but when that thing itches, there is no way to scratch it.  Ditto with the rest of the mucous membranes in a person's head.  You've never been miserable until the INSIDE of your head itches like a thousand mosquito bites...and then all those membranes start to swell up, and then hurt.  Talk about a headache!  And toothache...in EVERY tooth.

We have a couple employees that must bath in perfume...I swear you can smell them from 100 yards.   :banghead:

Of course, I'm never going to sue my employer, or push for laws against wearing perfume...I'm perfectly capable of simply leaving the area when someone really reeks.   :whatever:
