She wasn't always the wallflower she is now.

Even though Mrs. Alfred Packer thoughtlessly dumped her high school
beau, remaining single for a couple of decades, I suspect she'd really be happier back in Ohio, among a large loving family that observes age-old traditions, such as doing Christmas.
Mrs. Alfred Packer's teenaged
beau undoubtedly long ago married someone else after his rejection, and has since put in circa 30 years at the tire factory up in Ohio, meaning he's about ready to retire with a comfortable pension.
I think Mrs. Alfred Packer would actually be happier up in Ohio, even if single.
She could've evolved into one of those matronly old maids who dominate church pot-luck suppers, who set up the nativity scene in front of the altar, who run the charity drives, and who play bridge with the priest's housekeeper.
And who of course are always remembered fondly and affectionately by the rest of us.
There are fates in life considerably worse than that.
