Are you noticing a large rise in the homeless population in YOUR city?

I was out today and was stopped THREE times.

One was near the gas station. A homeless person came over to me and asked me if I could go with him to the KFC near the gas station to help him get something to eat. (yes, asked for the meal - not cash)

Another was a homeless lady at the light.

The third was a volunteer outside the grocery store with a table set up for donations.

This is becoming more and more common here. Three years ago it was incredibly rare to be approached by a homeless person. These days it is almost a daily occurrence.

People NEED JOBS. When the hell is congress going to actually address this? Do they realize they are risking a republican take over this November? In which case all bets are off for any job creation efforts.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in the homeless population where you live?

I haven't seen any homeless people here, but the foodbanks have been hard hit by the 0Bamaconomy.

1. yep. Here in Indianapolis, I see a lot of white men in 20s and 30s begging.

Often, their wife and kids are begging with them. If you see those sorts begging, you know the economys in trouble.

2. I'm noticing less. I think the cops are running them out of town.

There used to be homeless with signs panhandling outside of supermarkets and strip malls. They seem to be gone. They never were allowed in the Village downtown area with all the antique shops and tourist oriented cutsey shops.

lot of people knocking on door all winter asking me for odd jobs. I cant afford it.
one guy just came right out and asked me for money (for nothing)

i have a feeling this summer will bring the same thing.

The guy just asking for cash was a fellow DUmmie.

5. Maybe not exactly the same

but here in the Dallas area I am seeing TONS of out-of-state license plates. Michigan, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, etc. - they seem to be all over the place. Things aren't great here, but from what I understand they're lots better than in other parts of the country.

Yeah, nobody would go to Texas in the winter, when it is warmer there. (usually)

Not much there, but I thought all of this was supposed to end on January 20th, 2009?

No, it usually means you have some young folks who have figured out an easier way to make a living.  They obviously aren't willing to do what it takes to change their station in life.  Not all but most of them are doing nothing more than skimming cash from those who are willing to buy their hard luck story rather than do what it takes to get a job.

I was hit up a few weeks ago by a young girl outside a local CVS. She wanted money for dinner. I told her I didn't hand out money to strangers, but if she was really hungry, I would buy her something reasonable inside CVS.  It seemed reasonable to me that a hungry person would agree to take whatever a stranger offered.  Her reply was no- she was hungry for something hot from the restaurant across the street.  I laughed it off and said she must not be that hungry if she was turning down my offer.

Next thing I know, she shows up with the biggest jug of eggnog she could find.  I'm not one to make hungry people jump through hoops, but eggnog?  I turned down her request and she wanted to know why I wouldn't buy it for her. I informed her that eggnog does not = a meal, and if she wanted a complete stranger to help her out, at the least she could pick something that was a meal. She didn't like that answer at all, and disappeared while I continued to shop.  She tried a couple of equally ridiculous ploys, at which time I finally gave up and told her she must not be that hungry. She said something really tacky and stomped off in a huff.   I left her to hunt down the next unsuspecting stranger.

I'm happy to help those who are down on their luck and truly need something.  I'm even ok with getting suckered once in awhile by someone who at least acts thankful for help from strangers.  She burned me a bit, but I didn't lose anything out of the deal, and I now have a funny story (at least to me) of someone who is so hungry that only eggnog will take away the gnawing pain.

I remember seeing a circular.... they advertised english muffins, frozen sausage patties and eggs for very low prices. Made me hungry. Also had a jug of orange juice. For one person that could be breakfast for most of a week.

Yeah, but that would require a little work on that girl's part. She wasn't interested ;)

This has long disappeared from the common vocabulary, but when I was in college, and living in Lincoln (Nebraska), there used to be herds of automobiles of the homeless and dispossessed driving through the city, on their way to greener pastures.

It was like the "Okie" migration to California during the 1930s.

They were called "black plate people," because of their license-plates, which were black--at the time, Michigan.

They were residents of the "Rust Belt," states run by corrupt Democrat machines, moving on.

This was when the Incompetent One (1977-1981), the Great Humanitarian, was president.

DUmmy TwinkyBoy keeps looking on the bright side. Needs to team up with Ladysquawk and bobbo the Hobo. If he keeps getting fired for insubordination and failing drug tests, TwinkyBoy will be sleeping on cardboard under a bridge before long. Let's face it, if you can't handle a job clerking in a discount store, there isn't much left you can do. One thing TwixVoy proves conclusively is an utter inability to construct a believable bouncy tale.

I never see a wino unless I go to the big city, which I don't like to do because of the presence of the winos, and the scandalous parking prices. But when I do go, the winos I see panhandling from tourists appear to have been winos since the Ford Administration, so I can't blame them on the jug-eared muslim.

Why aren't those Primitives taking the unfortunates into their homes?  I saw not one response in that thread talking about what they were doing to solve the issue.  I did see a reference to government aid, but no Primitives acting 'progressively'.
