Flame, can you manage to take a pic and post it?
I may have told the story already, but it's worth retelling, maybe.
Back in August, I was doing some of the interminable yard work and I looked up and saw 6 dogs watching me work. It turned out to be 5 puppies about 6 months old and the dam. They were in bad shape - emaciated, tick-ridden, tired and thirsty. We brought them in the garage and fed them. A lot. Worked with them about a week in trying to find homes, was successful in giving away two of them, and took 3 of them, including the dam, to the Humane Society. We'd tried the no-kill shelter, but they were full up. Well, it turned out that since the dam had some pit bull in her, they (the HS) were simply going to put her down. Mrs. E was royally pissed, because they didn't say that on the phone. We wound up surrendering the dogs anyway, but some good news developed out of it.
The dam was picked up by a foster family and later (about two months ago), was adopted by a family in the KC area.
The fifth puppy Mrs E and I kept, largely because she and Belle, our golden retriever, were instant buddies. Lexie is doing fabulously, is a dedicated frog and vole hunter, and is every bit the guard dog that Belle could never be. That dog is scary smart, too, and that's another area that Belle is somewhat deficient in.
