I may have ended up with a new dog...
« on: January 21, 2010, 04:04:03 PM »
Coming home from work today, temps about 35, saw this dog, like a mini golden retriever, about the size of a large beagle, SOAKING wet, crawling out of some weeds on the side of the road.  Could barely stay upright, tripped coming off the curb when it walked in front of my truck (I had stopped).

Poor thing was shivering so hard...I scooped her up and put her in the truck and brought her home.   She is old, has hip issues I think.  No injuries that I can see, but the typical old dog hip issues I think.

She's a sweetheart so far.

Can't do stairs though, which is a problem in this house.

I'll see how things go tonight (no problems with the other critters so far) and decide if I should take her to the vet tomorrow.

Thank you for your empathy and doing the right thing.

Regardless what happens to the dog, she has landed in good hands.

You might try a half an aspirin for the hip issue.

You're a good lady, Flame!

Sounds like your new dog has  found a good home. Here's hoping she gets on with your other pets.

You could do a lot worse than making a new friend of a Dog.
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

Awww....that's so sweet of you. I can't stand to see strays. Especially in awful weather! We have brought home our fair share...

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Good thing you found her.

Flame, can you manage to take a pic and post it?

I may have told the story already, but it's worth retelling, maybe.

Back in August, I was doing some of the interminable yard work and I looked up and saw 6 dogs watching me work. It turned out to be 5 puppies about 6 months old and the dam. They were in bad shape - emaciated, tick-ridden, tired and thirsty. We brought them in the garage and fed them. A lot. Worked with them about a week in trying to find homes, was successful in giving away two of them, and took 3 of them, including the dam, to the Humane Society. We'd tried the no-kill shelter, but they were full up. Well, it turned out that since the dam had some pit bull in her, they (the HS) were simply going to put her down. Mrs. E was royally pissed, because they didn't say that on the phone. We wound up surrendering the dogs anyway, but some good news developed out of it.

The dam was picked up by a foster family and later (about two months ago), was adopted by a family in the KC area.

The fifth puppy Mrs E and I kept, largely because she and Belle, our golden retriever, were instant buddies. Lexie is doing fabulously, is a dedicated frog and vole hunter, and is every bit the guard dog that Belle could never be. That dog is scary smart, too, and that's another area that Belle is somewhat deficient in.  :p

The dog is getting around better this morning.  She's old.  Very bad hips.  Can't do stairs at all, which is a huge problem in this house, as it is a split level...no way to the outside without stairs.

She's eating well, though.  Isn't skinny, so I don't think she's been out long.

I'll be posting flyers through the neighborhood here later today (after i get them made), and hope to find her people.

God bless you, Flame, and also Eupher.

Flame, do you have a Petco around?  Or maybe you could try Dr. Fosters and Smith online.  I used a ramp for my German Shepherd when his walking abilities deteriorated.  As soon as he was used to the concept, he loved it.

Yeah, we had to build a ramp from the backdoor for my boyfriend's Chow, when she became too arthritic to walk up and down stairs.  I wonder though,  If it is a splitlevel, the ramp might be too steep?

It would be a heck of a ramp....at minimun, 7 stairs.   If we end up not being able to find her people (fliers went up today, we'll walk the neighborhood tomorrow), I think I'll rig up an "elevator" system off the deck.

At this point, I hope we find her people...when she's outside, she walks the perimieter of the yard, and I just know she is trying to get home. Makes me feel bad for her. :bawl:

A good vet can prescribe meds that will help with the pain and mobility issues greatly (Remidyl comes to mind)......and if they are required on an ongoing basis, can be attained fairly cheaply through offshore vet pharmacies (I use one in Australia), for less than a third of their cost here in the US, and it is not illegal to import them.

Good info.  I will be keeping that in mind.  Remidyl is pretty pricey.  The glucosomine/chondroitin we used, we just got OTC.

Would be great news if the dog was chipped..
