Terrible Experience with OB/GYN Basically Pushing Surgery to Make Me Sterile

I've been having ob/gyn issues for quite some time, and more recently I needed a blood transfusion on Friday to stave off severe iron-deficiency anemia. This ob/gyn, who is one of the very few affiliated to my insurance here where I live, is an older male doctor with absolutely ZERO bedside manners. I'm at a point in my life where I can think about having a family, something I wasn't able to do earlier. I told him this.

He's strongly pushing for something called 'endometrial ablation' where the uterine lining is burned off, basically, thus making carrying a baby to term very difficult and not recommended, in effect making me sterile.

I'm only 37 (soon to be 38) and this has hit me hard. I fully understand that childbearing may not be in my future, but I would like that to be my option on my terms.

Instead, the doctor was pushing hard for this endometrial ablation, almost to the point where I thought he may be getting kickbacks from one of the companies that manufactures the process (there is a mesh balloon through which an electric charge is sent to 'shock' the endometrium). He then said I was old for motherhood, that the chances of having a child with Down's Syndrome are higher, etc., all of which are things I know fully well. He kept saying why I had not thought about children earlier, and I kept telling him I wasn't in position to do so over and over again.

Anyway, it's not easy being told you may not have a child and it's even less easy having a doctor, who is supposed to be your advocate in a sense, vehemently push to effectively sterilize you.

I have thought about adoption, but it seems, just by perusing the internet, that the criteria are demanding and I would never be approved (family history of cancer, I don't own a home, I don't have money, I'm not religious, I'm not married, etc. etc.).

So sad.  Speaking of Down's Syndrome

3. I am sorry you are facing this
Things will work out. We may not always understand at the moment, but in the end the right thing will happen.

I wanted at least 3 children, but I was only able to have the one. But, she is amazing. Something will work out for you.

Correction there greenbriar.  You were able to have two.  You CHOSE to get rid of number one remember ?  Dr. Tiller saved your life.   :whatever:

At least this DUmmy has the opportunity to get a second opinion and change doctors.

She won't have that opportunity under Obamacare.

Nope she wouldn't. Under O-Care she'd still be waiting for that transfusion to be OK'd.

Under ObamaCare it make actually be forced to be sterilized if it can't afford children.

The criteria must be incredibly demanding if they disqualify this DUmmy. How could she be turned down?

I had an endometrial ablation and it was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. It is done for heavy periods. If she is ready to have a baby then have one now and then have the ablation after. If she isn't quite ready then go on the pill until she is ready then have the ablation after she has the baby. If she can't take the pill for various reasons then she is pretty much out of options except for a hysterectomy.  That would be much worse in my opinion. The ablation was very easy and didn't hurt at all (except for something they did to me the day before but they dont do that any more for ablations). If she can't take the pill or can't wait a little while to get pregnant because her periods are that heavy (and mine was terrible but I could have waited) then her best option would be an ablation (unless she also has terrible cramps, it doesn't help with cramps) and adopt.

You need to be 2 queers or 2 lezboes to get a baby.

Yeah, she should have it now and start drawing the higher welfare checks. In fact, why stop at one - she could make more money if she had three or four.

Back in the day when the hippies started taking over the Doctors, I had a "long hair" in the emergency room,  actually examine "Toots" with me in the room. I wanted to kill the guy! I was never that progressive! Even less now! She goes to the female doc now with her sister. I'd just as soon be in the next state!!!!

In my younger years I had a female doctor and felt really odd about it.  The very idea of having a female touch my body made me squirm.

Years later after 4 childbirths by male doctors I on an emergency run to the ER had no choice but to go with the female doctor.    What a difference, she knew the right questions to ask, actually warmed the speculum before hand and was very gentle.

Since then I do what ever it takes to find a female doctor in any field of medicine.

It only makes sense for a woman to go to a Doctor that is of the same sex, same for men, those ads for erectile disfunction never show a male talking to a female doctor.

That woman needs to get a young woman doctor for her problem.   No way will a male doctor ever be in her situation or understand the mental make up of a patient that faces that procedure.

I would not take my Jeep to a diesel mechanic for boats.  Nor would I take a 14 year old male to a woman doctor for any problem involving his manhood.

I am not saying that going to a male doctor is bad for a woman but when it comes to MY plumbing, I want a plumber not an electrician.

When I was pregnant with my first kid I went to the doctor for my first visit. As I was laying down on the table with my legs in the stirrups my doctor asked me if my husband was out in the waiting room. I told him he was. He told me hold on a second. He goes out of the room, legs still in the stirrups, walks back in with my husband. Shows him a picture of what a "normal" cervix looks like. Sticks the speculum in and told him, look here, that is what a pregnant cervix looks like. My husband starts sliding down the wall. The doctor had to smack him in the face then he told him to sit down and put his head between his legs. LOL.

He has also fainted when he has had to give blood. He got hit in the forehead just above the right eye by a starter for a gokart and drove himself home while gushing blood. Went to the hospital and got stitches, didn't even flinch. Why some things make him faint and not others is a mystery.

You wouldn't have had an ablation if it weren't for me missy. :p

I know I told you what was done to me before the ablation and that you wouldn't have to have that happen to you because they had changed the way they did it.  I am a pioneer.  :-)

:-) :-)    Hubby was allowed to watch as the doctor chopped up my face in 3 cancer operations. They asked me if I myself wanted to see what they had done before sewing my face back on. Like an idiot I was curious and he handed me a mirror, unbelievable, really shook me up.  Doc told Hubby it would take 18 months to get back to looking like I had before,

Some doctors do odd things, I still have problems even looking in the mirror as I look nothing like I did last year.  However, Hubby now has an understanding why I tend to stay home way too much and don't socialise as in the past.  People I have know for 20 years have a hard time recognizing me when I run into them.  Meeting strangers is no problem, it is running into family that does a double take.

No Woman Doctor would ever have allowed any of that to happen, I to this day think that Doctor was [sniffing white out ] to even have allowed Hubby to be there in the first place.   Then to allow me to see the chunks taken from my face before sewing me up with black thread so I looked like Frankenstein is out rage's.

I cannot blame the doctor however, he as a man most likely was use to males that could grow a beard to cover damage.

Some of these male doctors do go nuts you know, they deal every day with female vanity that is more important then living.  A 2 centermeter scar will cause terror to them.

Who knows why he did this but some good has come of it.  While I wait 18 months for complete healing and I know I will never look the same, this weird experience ignited the dark humor in me and convinced me I should have held out for a Female doctor.

All is not lost, there are quite a few Muslims moving into the area. They have shops to buy half burkas, just head and face covering.  There has to be humor in all situations to survive and this is my biggest challenge yet in life.

I like your style.  Maybe you could buy a cheap one, for the pattern and then get one made that looks American.  I wouldn't suggest using the Flag, but maybe like some kind of chintzy apple pie, or piggies, or hotdogs, or elephants, or something?  I can't imagine what you must have been, and still are going through, but I surely do appreciate your tenacity.
