Oh my.

The gigantic primitive, voted #08 TOP PRIMITIVE OF 2009 under his name on Skins's island, the "Systematic Chaos" primitive:

Thanks to all of you who have posted advice, encouragement and well-wishes.

So, nine highly frustrating days have gone by since my last session on the recumbent, and today is the first day when there's no pain in the areas under my stomach where a couple of really bad rashes formed. Treating them two or three times a day by washing the areas, drying them off and then applying Eucerin took forever to work. Maybe I'll try Gold Bond powder next time.

At any rate, I'm frustrated, to the point that I don't have words to adequately describe it, at the time away from exercise while I've waited for the pain and irritation to subside enough to think about resuming my activity. I get the notion that I'm going to be putting up with this from now until I'm down in the range of 325 - 350. Maybe I'll get lucky and my skin will toughen up before then, but I'm assuming the worst.

I've been thinking about this near standstill with regards to weight loss, and wondering what I might be able to do to get a better idea how my body is running. Jeanette and I were talking about it a couple of evenings ago, and she brought up the Bodybugg system, which is a monitor you wear on your arm that measures your caloric expenditure within 10% accuracy. The user then goes to the website, links the Bodybugg to their computer via USB connection, and inputs every bite of food on the website. The site then tracks caloric intake vs. caloric expenditure and calculates your daily defecit or surplus. The Biggest Loser uses this system on the contestants, and it seems to help the trainers and contestants considerably.

We decided that we're going to go ahead and get me one of those. It's not cheap, and it will require me to track what I eat as closely as possible, but it might help -- much more than my present reliance on guesses and speculation -- in my quest to understand why weight isn't coming off reliably when by all rights it should be. Additionally, I can post screenshots of my results here and let the experts on the boards take a stab at deciphering what they see.

We have a crock pot of soup made from frozen vegetables and a frozen container of our homemade spaghetti sauce ready to go today. Jeanette took a container of it to work, and I'll be having it throughout the day. I know I've said previously that I'd be exercising and I ended up not doing it, but taking one good look at the angry red patches on my skin in the mirror is what caused me to hold off until I really was better. If I bring the problem back, I'll deal with it again and resume exercise yet again as soon as I'm better. It's all I really can do right now....

I'm just tired of the frustrating crap. I want this done. I'll never give up, though.

Well, that's right.

One can't give up.

However, if something's not working, it's always a good idea to try something else.

But oh.....one forgets.  The gigantic primitive is a liberal, meaning the gigantic primitive tries the same thing over and over and over again, expecting a different result next time.

By the way, putting corn starch under the belly flap might work.

And corn starch is dirt cheap; no need to buy any of this chemical junk.

You know, I'm starting to get irritated with the gigantic primitive.

The guy's not serious about losing weight.

An idea I proposed last week is starting to sound better and better; having Jeanette lock him up in a cage, and giving him a bowl of cold gruel every day, and an apple every third Sunday.

It sounds cruel, and one wouldn't ordinarily recommend such a barbaric thing, but this is an extraordinary case demanding extraordinary means to save his life.

He loves to hear himself whine and have a website of enablers pat him on the back. Potatoes by the shovelful is not a weight-loss diet, it's a gimmick. Besides, I seriously doubt he's sticking to a potatoes and rice only diet, although chips are a form of potato, I suppose.

And good grief, how can anyone want to post about their disgusting bodily functions and malfunctions on public forums. Looking for help with illness is one thing, but detailed chafing?  :hammer:

Of course he's not. Why better yourself or make yourself more healthy when you have an enabler like Jeanette around. She seems to love him just the way he is so why change?

If you are reading this Kirk I hate to say it but discomfort is something you are going to have to deal with, you didn`t get where you are easily or quickly and you won`t get away from it any differently.

I do think it is a good step to actually have a calorie log, that is important as without it one always guesses to their mental happiness and physical detriment.

I think LVL does read this and we know his old lady does so here goes...don't buy that crap you're talking about. I contend you've been lying to your wife about what you've been eating and this new gadget is just a way of keeping you honest. Don't waste the money. Stop eating all the starches. Stop drinking all the soda. Stop eating the salsa. Make your own pico de gallo(without the salt.) Carrot and celery sticks throughout the day. Start exercising your upper body if you can't use your bike. Low weights, lots of reps. Watching tv, sit up in your chair and do curls, overhead presses and overhead tricep presses. Don't know what that stuff is, go get a copy of Muscle and Fitness. Good luck big guy...I mean that.

 :whatever:

The bodybugg is a good tool but if he isn't willing to tell the truth on what he is consuming it won't do any good.  Wonder if he is willing to let Jeanette go through the house to make sure there is no hidden food, set aside what he is allowed to consume for the day and LOCK the cabinets and refrigerator until Jeanette gets home?

Of course this would require them to know exactly how many calories are in the food he is going to be allowed to eat during the day and they absolutely have to know there is nothing hidden in the house and that he doesn't have someone else to bring him food.

He will not try something new apparently. They are going to waste their money on this "sysytem" and nothing will happen. He will lie to the website about his intake and his exersize and the results back will be a lie as a result.

I am also overweight, not to his extent of course. I can get up and walk a mile, for instance. I should try this meat, lettuce and water diet plan.

I hear ya, but I'm under the impression he can barely even walk around the house. Once he's able, Vegas is a great place to exercise. Long walks would go a long way.
I don't believe he has the discipline for the diet plan suggested. He needs a lot to eat, hence my suggestion to eat stuff like celery and carrots. Can eat that shit all day and shouldn't add any calories. FWIW.

It will at least make him honest about his actual calorie expenditure.  No more claiming that he is burning 3000 calories a day laying around.  If he wears it 24 hours a day and it shows that he has a regular calorie deficit, and he doesn't lose weight, the answer is that he is lying about what he is eating, whether intentionally or not.  The bodybugg measures how many calories your body actually uses.

Glad to see that he is trying something new.

That one statement right there is why he hasn't lost more! I will guarantee he is eating twice the calories and carbohydrates he thinks he is!

The good thing about this system is that only thing he will actually input is his food.  He'll wear the bodybugg device on his arm and it will track his actual calorie expenditure, not his estimates.

A public health nurse could give him solutions to the recurring skin problems.  Any nurse's aid, who has worked in a nursing home could, too.  Pretty common problem, but easy to solve and prevent.  Not expensive, either.

The suggestion to work his arms if working his legs causes those areas severe pain is a good one.  Heck, even isometric exercises would be better than nothing.

Isometrics would definitely be worth it.
I would try to do some things while watching tv. Leg raises, extensions, that sort of thing. He could even do some modified crunches. Get some knee braces, grab on to a door frame and try some slight lunges or sissy squats. Start building some strength without the chafing. Or not.  :-)

From what I understand about the bodybugg is that it reports to their web site and show actual calories burned.  He won't be able to lie about it.  Unless he takes it off and 'estimates' but I don't think it will allowt that.

Sometimes the ads here are perfect...just clicked on this thread and the ad was "Lose big with Jillian (michaels) -38lbs."

This whole LVL situation has inspired me to get in better shape. I will NOT be sharing my results with the world.  :naughty:

Yeah, I just got back on the BowFlex Monday after an extended 'quit' period.  Problem right now is it is sitting in the garage and we have temps in the 30's for this week!  *ahem* I'll be 'starting' the BowFlex routine on Monday when we're back in the 50's.

I don't do cold.

Same here. My equipment is also in the too cold garage. I already do upper body exercises while watching tv. I'll start push-ups and crunches until it warms up enough to get in the garage.
