NY's Northern Zone deer season, for rifles, opened yesterday. Met my father at my parents' house at 5 AM to go up to deer camp. Got into the camp at around 7:20 (I know, I know), with no one dressed yet (typical). We figured that we could do a few drives before the rain really started. I was a driver on the first one, and I had seen on the Weather Channel's "future" map that we were due for a shot of rain around 9 AM. So, I thought enough to wear a rain jacket. At 9:05 AM, the sky opened up for about an hour. We were near the end of the drive anyway, and the driver 100 yards to my right told me later that he had something big (judging from the hoofprints it left) moving in front of him--but it went to the left, away from me. Back to the camp to try to dry out. Two more drives later, right around 1 PM, it started again--and didn't stop. My father said, "We're going." It poured for almost the entire two-hour trip back . . . I'm glad I thought to take a silicone-impregnated cloth with me, as it took a fair amount of the water off of the Winchester 94. Took me a little while to clean it when I got back, too. Gonna clean it again today.
