I think the friggen groomers may have made my dog blind.
« on: October 10, 2009, 10:04:34 PM »
My husband and daughter went to pick up our dogs at the groomers.  My daughter noticed when they got in the car that something was wrong with Toby's eye.  She said something to me when she came inside but I was busy doing something.  About an hour later I looked at it and freaked out.  When you try to look at it he pulls away and you can tell it hurts him.  It's all wet around it and is rolled back in his head.  When you just look at him when he is sitting there it looks like he is blind in that eye.

My husband called the groomer and of course they say they didn't do anything.  He was fine before he went in there.  My husband is at a vet that would see him as an emergency.  I am so pissed right now I swear if the groomer were standing right in front of me I would slap the shit out of her.

Probably sprayed a chemical too close to his eyes. I hope he will be okay.  :bawl:

My husband just called, they are getting ready to put some numbing drops in his eye so they can see if the cornea has been scratched.  The Vet said it is quite common when dogs are groomed.  I hope that is all it is.  If it is only a scratch the Vet said it should heal in a few days. I swear it looked much worse than a scratch but we will see.  Keep your fingers crossed for poor toby.

Damn CA groomers...I'd probably take my dogs back to the place and command them to bite the sh*t out of the mofo who did it.

There is a scratch all the way across his right eye. He has to wear one of those cone things around his neck to keep him from rubbing his eye for five days. We also have to put drops in his eye several times a day.

I dunno, I had two 100-plus pound dogs who were regularly groomed before I left CA, and the place I went (Petsmart) did a great job.

I would take the vet bill to to the groomer and give them a choice of paying or facing a lot of negative publicity...i.e. call a local reporter, file a claim with the BBB (for what little that is worth), etc.

That is where we took them. It doesn't look any better this morning.  You should have seem us trying to get drops in his eye this morning. We could not get his eye open. It took us forever to get just one drop in his eye.

Even though I am pissed at the groomed, the vet said that it happens quite frequently. The vet also said Toby could have gotten a piece of hair or something in his eye and scratched it by rubbing it trying to get it out as well.

BEG, I've been through this exact same thing several years ago. I picked up my big 135 pound dog from the groomers and noticed him pawing at his eye. It wasn't long till it looked just as you described. My vet at the time was a friend, so I was in the back room with him while he put my dog to sleep, then he pulled up the dog's inner eyelid (dogs have 2 sets) and he sewed the inner bottom lid up to the outter top lid of that eye. He left it that way for about a week - boy was it was grody looking - and I also had to put drops in twice a day. Then when he took the stitches out it was all perfectly back to normal. The vet never found anything in his eye, but said there was a deep scratch that looked like the groomer probably got a hair in there.

Later after this, I learned that a really good professional groomer will use some stuff in their eyes before they start that is like a waxy sauve that is supposed to protect from this happening.

I hope your baby is back to normal soon. I don't blame you a bit for being pissed, I'm pissed all over again right now myself.

lucky for you you have a vet friend. Toby's little visit last night cost us $198. It's worth it but right now with all of the expenses of the move I would rather not have had to spend it.

I'll reimburse you so long as the little guy is OK. I think everyone, by now, should know how big of a dog lover I am. I brought 9 into the world and kept two.

Hope your pooch get well soon. I don't like groomers at Pet Smart. It might be more convenient to take the animal in on a Saturday but I would rather find someone that has been in the business for many years opposed to an amateur. Pet Smart has a high turn over rate of groomers.

Good to hear that the dog will be fine. OTOH why bother grooming a dog? All they do is roll in their own shit in the backyard.
