I have a real problem with this.
It totally feeds the stereotype that all Democrats want to do is raise taxes.



(09-17) 20:36 PDT -- Calling soda the new tobacco, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will introduce legislation this fall that would charge a fee to retailers that sell sugary beverages.

Newsom would need voter approval to tax individual cans of soda and sugary juice, but only needs approval from the Board of Supervisors to levy a fee on retailers. His legislation would charge grocery stores like Safeway and big-box stores, but would not affect restaurants that serve sodas.

Newsom wouldn't say how much the stores would have to pay or how the city would spend the fees. When he first floated the idea in 2007, he said the money would go to his Shape Up San Francisco exercise program and for media campaigns to discourage soda drinking.

The mayor said the city attorney's office has warned him the city would probably be sued over the matter, but he said it is worth the risk to try to curb a leading cause of obesity and diabetes.

at the federal level. Though I hate regressive taxes, there is a reason for it. Take a look at NATIONAL obesity rates.

In other words you hate taxes that you will have to pay.

This is a tax I can support. They should also increase San Francisco income tax, sales tax,
and property tax. And their utility rates are waaay too low.

Anything that causes pain for Bay Area moonbats is a good thing.

Sales tax is already above 9% in CA, I think it is very nearly 10% in some places.

The generic term down here is Coke. But Dr. Pepper is #1 in brands and Coke is #2 I think.

The just jacked up the sales tax in CA by another 1 percent.  "Low" tax Orange County is at 8.75 percent.  LA County is 9.25 percent.  SF County is 9.5 percent.  Add in the "special" city taxes, and there are places in CA where the sales tax is over 10 percent.  This is, of course, on top of the already Godawful 9.3 percent income tax, fees, car registration which runs TRIPLE what it was when I left (and it was $450 then), and property taxes, among other jewels, and it's amazing that anyone can even afford to live there anymore.

Yep--just keep on taking money that isn't yours from people who don't have it, you assclowns.  The revolution is coming, and we ain't paying the tax on the cake you're inevitably going to tell us to eat.

In Tennessee, sales tax is 9+%, but state income tax is zero, city income tax is zero, property taxes are extremely low, car registration $50.

But in Tennessee you don't benefit from all the hundreds of boards, commissions, authorities, and other swarms of regulatory agencies like in California.

There are no gay pride parades that I've heard of, you may have to drive miles to find a free AIDS clinic, and hippies don't live in the treetops.

It's red state hell.

So I guess when it comes to taxes you get what you pay for, and California is just more advanced

I happen to be drinking an ice cold canned Dr. Pepper at this very time.  I have little regard for those who misunderestimate the deliciosity of Dr. Pepper.  Such people obviously have a agenda against their betters in the South.  

On the subject of taxing sodas, should not the Little Goons be raging in revolt against such a biased plan?  After all, the "rich" will not miss one serving of their perferred drink, while the "poor" will have to decide between soda and medicine.

GOBUCKS, I'm from "pop" country too, originally (Ohio).  When I moved to NY I got a raft of shit for calling it that.  I agree with you on the Pepsi.  Vile, vile stuff.  Diet Dr. Pepper is my softdrink of choice. 
Funny list of new taxes that SF could enjoy.  Would love to sit and dream up some more, but gotta run.
