U.S. to Shelve Nuclear-Missile Shield in Europe
« on: September 17, 2009, 04:32:51 AM »
Quote
WASHINGTON -- The White House will shelve Bush administration plans to build a missile-defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, according to people familiar with the matter, a move likely to cheer Moscow and roil the security debate in Europe.

The U.S. will base its decision on a determination that Iran's long-range missile program has not progressed as rapidly as previously estimated, reducing the threat to the continental U.S. and major European capitals, according to current and former U.S. officials.

The findings, expected to be completed as early as next week following a 60-day review ordered by President Barack Obama, would be a major reversal from the Bush administration, which pushed aggressively to begin construction of the Eastern European system before leaving office in January.

The Bush administration proposed the European-based system to counter the perceived threat of Iran developing a nuclear weapon that could be placed atop its increasingly sophisticated missiles. There is widespread disagreement over the progress of Iran's nuclear program toward developing such a weapon, but miniaturizing nuclear weapons for use on long-range missiles is one of the most difficult technological hurdles for an aspiring nuclear nation.

The Bush plan infuriated the Kremlin, which argued the system was a potential threat to its own intercontinental ballistic missiles. U.S. officials repeatedly insisted the location and limited scale of the system -- a radar site in the Czech Republic and 10 interceptor missiles in Poland -- posed no threat to Russian strategic arms.

There's no reason to defend against the communists, when you basically agree with their theories.

If the euros want missile defenses I'm sure they can build them themself.  :whatever:

I did mean Europe as a whole entity - not Poland in specific case.

This sellout has in the works for a while.  Last month we made an offer to the Russians that we wouldn't put in the same GBI ABM system as we have in Alaska and California (the one they are screaming bloody murder about) and would instead put in a ground-based AEGIS ABM system which has far less range than the GBI system.

The Russians rejected that as well.

We just hung the Poles out to dry.  We are backing off in hope that the Russians  will help us contain the Iranian missile and nuclear programs--both of which the Iranians have said are "not for negotiating"...

Obama is making Carter look liek a foreign policy genius.

I have to say, Obumbler is just AWESOME, he threw Europe under the bus.

Poland was fast becoming one of our better allies in Easter Europe. To the point that back about four years ago when there was grumbling of the Germans kicking us completely out of the country Poland was considered as a country to move our Eurpoean forces to.

Now in one fell swoop this administration has given a giant middle finger to two new and emerging allies and a big thumbs up to two countries that would love to bring us to our knees.

Intelligence Guidance (Special Edition): Sept. 17, 2009 - U.S. Withdrawal on BMD
September 17, 2009 | 1339 GMT

DMITRY ASTAKHOV/AFP/Getty Images
U.S. President Barack Obama (L) and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev in Moscow on July 7Editor's Note: The following is an internal STRATFOR document produced to provide high-level guidance to our analysts. This document is not a forecast, but rather a series of guidelines for understanding and evaluating events, as well as suggestions on areas for focus.

U.S.: Backing Down on BMD
U.S., Russia: The Wider Ramifications of Pulling BMD Plans
Ballistic missile defense (BMD) as a military system had no significance for either Poland or the Czech Republic. It was not designed to defend them. Rather, its presence was a symbol to both countries that the United States was prepared to defend them, because it has a vital strategic asset in their countries. The shock in Poland and Czech Republic is about a symbolic shift from their point of view.

What we need to analyze is whether this has any substantial meaning. The question at hand is the state of U.S.-Polish/Czech military cooperation in other areas. Beneath this is the commitment of the United States - outside the context of NATO - for a bilateral relationship, particularly with Poland. Will the United States substitute increased military cooperation for the loss of BMD?

As the news spins that the United States has decided to shelve their plans for BMD system in Poland and the Czech Republic, it seems as if the Americans have given a major concession to the Russians, who have been staunchly opposed to the system.

The timing of the decision is clearly intended to induce Russian cooperation with the United States over Iran. The question is whether there was any prior understanding with Russia regarding this matter. Does the United States have some understanding of a quid pro quo with Russia? The Russian-U.S. tussle over the issue of BMD in Central Europe was never really about BMD. The system never gave Poland anything. It was about the future of U.S.-Polish military cooperation. This is what defines Russia's view of its relationship with the United States.

It is expected that a lot of noise will come out of Poland on the BMD issue, but this by itself has no influence on that unless it is a general redefinition of the U.S. relationship with Poland.

The key here is to focus on U.S.-Russian relations in the aftermath of this deal and focus on it in terms of, first, Russia's next actions on Iran and, second, whether the United States is making substantial shifts on Poland.

STRATFOR will be concentrating on gathering information on this now in Moscow and Washington. That's where this is being played out.

I think they were very unhappy with Dear Leader when he snubbed Poland during the commemoration ceremony of the start of WWII. No high level officials from the US attended.

Just plain FUBAR.  In one stroke, we give the Russians everything they wanted, for nothing in return; stabbed Poland and the Czechs in the back; told the Ukranians and Georgians they can't rely on us for jack against the Russians; locked our focus on a single avenue of threat from Iran; and hinted to the Iranians they better launch their solid fuel rockets at Israel because we're not even looking for them in that direction.  Jesus F. I'm sure we all remember all the Polish/Pollock jokes we've heard as kids (I never understood the meaning behind the Polish being the butt of these jokes anyway). Now, I wouldn't be surprised if the Polish are making these same kind of jokes about Obama.
