I'm watching that episode right now.  I'm suprised he's having such a reaction to it.  Being allergic to bees is supposed to make you disqualified to serve in the US military.  I'd have thought the Brits woulda been like that to.

I'm not sure about the point you're making regarding a "reaction" to hundreds of bee stings.

Seems to me that regardless of allergies a person might or might not have, if your ass gets stung by hundreds of bees, you're gonna swell up like a balloon.

Bee stings don't tickle. I've been stung numerous times (singly each time) and the swelling and itching, not to mention the pain, is pretty compelling. AFAIK, I'm not allergic to bee stings.

If you were actually allergic to bee stings, and got hundreds of them, you'd just be frickin' dead in half an hour, back-up team or not.  Having your face completely swell up from it is not an abnormal or allergic reaction at all.

My dad is a former Marine.  I wanted to be a Marine but when I went to enlist the recruiter asked me questions.  When he asked me if I was allegic to anything and I said "bees" he sat back and said he couldn't take me.  No one could.  I walked out of his office and straight into the Army recruiter's office.  When we got to the part that asked if I was allergic to anything I said "Nope."  That was the begining of my enlistment.

I'm sorry.  If anyone thinks that is wrong they can kiss my ass.  I wanted to serve my country and I wanted to do it in a bad way.  I doubt any enemy combatants would have thrown a fit had they known I was allergic to bees.  I was a paratrooper and I was proud to be one.

Texacon, my statements weren't really directed at you, but to those that made some rather pointed accusations about Recruiters.

It's NOT my fault if someone fails to inform me of some potentially disqualifying factor. I worked very hard to get people into the Navy and I even put in some shady characters. Of course, I DID run the required waivers. I helped one guy enlist that was living on the streets of Minneapolis in the winter. Non High school grad that could barely pass the ASVAB. Turns out he had enough college/ Votech to make him the equivalent of a high school grad. He also had some criminal stuff in his background. ALL of this was on record when he went to process.

As far as a "values fail", one needs to walk in the shoes of a Recruiter before they make asinine statements and condemnations like that.

No sweat.  I didn't take it personally.  Recruiters have a tough job and because of that a very high suicide rate.  That is a lot of pressure.

I think Les is more of a realist and I think he's got better all-round "survivor" chops than Bear-boy Wonder.

I knew Bear-Boy Wonder was a world class idiot when I saw him invade a bee's nest for some honey. He must've been stung hundreds of times, his eyes were swollen shut, and he got more wax than honey.

Freakin' dweeb.  :mental:

Les Stroud is without a doubt an excellent outdoors man whose demonstrated that he can survive in harsh hellish conditions.  I wouldn't want to compare the survival skills or training between the two.  Bear's show is entertainment first.

He only got stung by one and his face swelled up like a balloon.  I've been stung by 5 before, and there was no swelling at all.

Amen to that.  My father did the job for 6 years.  Everytime I see someone attacking recruiters I want to put my boot so far up their ass they can taste the rubber.

I saw the program, Jonesey. There's no way in hell he got stung by only one bee. I could see them swarming all around him. Then there was the "after" shot with Bear swollen up so badly he couldn't see properly.

Perhaps you're not affected by bee stings. Most people are affected, but it doesn't mean they're allergic to bee stings. If you're allergic to bee stings, as DAT pointed out, anaphylactic shock can put you down PERMANENTLY.
