Momentum behind a new government-run health care plan appeared to slow considerably Sunday, as a lead Democratic negotiator called the option a "wasted effort" and President Obama's health secretary suggested the White House is ready to accept a health care reform package without it.

Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., one of six negotiators trying to hammer out a bipartisan compromise measure on the Senate Finance Committee, told "FOX News Sunday" that the so-called public option simply does not have the votes to pass.

"The fact of the matter is there are not the votes in the United States Senate for the public option. There never have been," he said. "So to continue to chase that rabbit I think is just a wasted effort." ...

There aren't even enough votes in the House right now, kids.  Unless and until they do some major revamping of this turd of a bill, its done.

Obummer spent his entire political capital in one year.  Nice going, Zero.  Way to turn yourself into a lame duck until you get voted out in 2012.

NO COMPROMISE!!   NO CONSIDERATION OF THESE "NON-PROFIT CO-OPS" because all it does is set us up for Evil Liberal Incrementalism.    They will still have their rationing, and Boards, Statistical projections, control of the medical records, etc.

Who cares if it is a “Co-op” or the Government?   It just allows the Government to later take over the Co-ops like they did GM.

Don't clap too soon, I expect we will still see a "Health Insurance Reform Bill of 2009" come out of it, and God knows what kind of garbage soup that will be.

Unfortunately for their Lordships in Congress,  there's a bunch more Americans that're suspicious of what kind of shit sandwich they suspect their "elected representatives" will try to serve up, and they'll now be watching for it.

I read this thread title and thought it said "Public OPINION". Sadly, that would be accurate as well.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

It's almost as though the Dems are playing some sort of shell game with our heads.  This may sound like a victory for Obamacare opponents.....but we haven't seen what's under the "other" shells  :argh:

Its always a Shell game with Congress. How many times have we seen something "Defeated " only to turn up later as an amendment or something else later on?

Yep, the death panels were approved in the stimulus bill back in January.
all it takes is One crisis, and nancy has another 3000 page monster bill no one could possibly read and they've got everything they want.

and this bill is bad enough even without the public option. It should be defeated as it stands.

Hi,

Just read a Glenn Beck twitter.  Said not to cheer, cave is a farce.  They will still try to put structure in place.  Need to write our congressmen and tell them no on any government payment for services whatsoever.

I wrote and suggested the do it like auto insurance where high risk drivers are in a pool and randomly assigned to insurance companies.  That creates more competition as they need more good drivers to spread the risk.

As far as those who cannot pay, treat them like those of us on Medicare.  Our drug premiums are deducted from our social security check.  Those in the bottom half of the earnings curve normally get a check back from the government.  Why not deduct the insurance premiums from that check.  I would rather pay their insurance premiums than their claims.

regards,
5412

Something will get passed because Repubs do not want to be tabbed as the party of NO. That will be a huge mistake. Once politicians get a foot in the door, they will little by little increase their intrusion and eventually will wind up with a single payer system. I hope Repubs see the writing on the wall but I doubt it.
