In Venezuela, Land Redistribution Program Backfires

In Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez's government has made the expropriation of farmland â€” taking land from big landholders and giving it to the poor â€” central to his so-called revolution. The idea is to spur production and end dependence on food imports.

But the results have fallen short, making the country more dependent on foreign food than ever before.

Consider farmer Ramon Barrera, who spends his days feeding a handful of scrawny pigs.

He thought he also would be raising crops after arriving a few months ago in Las Vegas, a town in a sun-baked corner of northwestern Venezuela.

The land had been a vast cattle ranch before the government seized it to redistribute to poor farmers like Barrera.

But Barrera says there is no irrigation, no technical help from the government and no credit.

Chavez started out right, but lately has done some very anti-democratic things - which call into question any of its organs.

Then again, the US has done some very anti-democratic things - and IT'S organs need to be called into question.

Maybe she's still mourning some roses, or trying to defraud her mother's bank.

Stealing from the rightful owners of something is not 'democratic' either so Chavez was WRONG and an enemy of freedom from the get go. These really are not hard connections for people to make. They really aren't.

What did they think was going to happen?

Why would they think there was any other outcome rather than failure?

Taking a vast efficient ranch and turning it into tiny subsistance farms is not going to help the economy, is not going to help tax revenue, is not going to be efficient at all. There was no other possible outcome.

It's a great idea that Yugo borrowed from Josef Stalin, who did exactly, precisely, the same thing. It caused a famine in the Ukraine that killed seven million people in 1932-33. Yugo should have more success with it, because if they start to starve, the U.S. will start shipping in thousands of tons of food.

That is, unless the jug-eared Kenyan outlaws dust.

Turning some of the most efficient farms and ranches in the country into tiny peasant dirt farms was never going to work, there was never a chance it would. It was all about propaganda points.

Let's see; expropriation of "corporate" farm land in Russia: Results in 70 years of the Soviet Army needing to be called in to havest the crops before they rot in the fields and mass starvation descend upon Lenin's Worker's Paradise.

Expropriation of "corporate" farm land in Zimbabwe: Results in a healthy - formerly Rhodesian - economy becoming the poster child for economic basket cases.

But of course, it's certainly possibly that Hugo Chavez is smarter than Lenin and Robert Mugabe; it's isn't completely inconceivable that he could be the one to finally make the Communist playbook work where those other mass murdering numbskulls failed.

When wandering around the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants with free medical care for all, I stumbled upon a most interesting statistic about Ukraine, which is the same land-size as Texas or France.

Three percent of the farmland in Ukraine, at least at the time, circa 15 years ago, was privately owned, and produced 60% of the food.

Whoa, if thats true, that factoid alone should be enough to change minds, But minds won't for DUmmies who will say that the private owners had the "best land" and the government was being deprived or something.
