Might want to wait until the results are in from here, but if they did it's a BIG problem.  Thanks, Zerobama.

Obviously I'm no geologist, but a nuke test would be detected on seismic equipment worldwide and has a distinct signature.  Has anyone here or anyone associated with the USGS said anything yet?

Nuclear explosions don't really create that large of a seismic signature.  Especially small ones like the type they'll be dealing with for a while.  Last time N. Korea detonated a nuke, we had to do various things to determine it's legitimacy.  None of which I can really talk about.

Looking at the USGS site though, there was a 4.7 quake that happened in the region of where Nork tested their last nuke at.  They had to have detonated one freakin monster to get a quake that large though.

Nah, you'd be talking in the 2-3 range.  Plus, without getting into much detail, it would be a much sharper/shorter duration than an earthquake or other natural event.

Yep--now the NK's are claiming they tested a nuke.  Anyone here think they might be trying to say, "No, that wasn't a 4.7 earthquake, that was us firing off a nuke!"

If so, that would be along the same lines as "Dear Leader" claiming 8 holes-in-one the first time he ever played golf.  Helluva coincidence though, huh?

An above the ground test?

Probably not.  The error is +/- 5km.  More likely than not if it was a nuke test it would have been several hundred meters, but not 6 miles.

Very unlikely.  Glad I'm not in Misawa right now.  Hated it when they tested the last one.

Get Ready for Another North Korean Nuke Test

Iran could soon be following Pyongyang's example.

By JOHN R. BOLTON

The curtain is about to rise again on the long-running nuclear tragicomedy, "North Korea Outwits the United States." Despite Kim Jong Il's explicit threats of another nuclear test, U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Bosworth said last week that the Obama administration is "relatively relaxed" and that "there is not a sense of crisis." They're certainly smiling in Pyongyang.

In October 2006, North Korea witnessed the incredible diplomatic success it could reap from belligerence. Its first nuclear test brought resumption of the six-party talks, which gave Kim Jong Il cover to further advance his nuclear program.

Now, Kim is poised to succeed again by following precisely the same script. In April, Pyongyang launched a Taepodong-2 missile, and National Security Council official Gary Samore recently confirmed that a second nuclear test is likely on the way. The North is set to try two U.S. reporters for "hostile acts." The state-controlled newspaper calls America "a rogue and a gangster." Kim recently expelled international monitors from the Yongbyon nuclear complex. And Pyongyang threatens to "start" enriching uranium -- a capacity it procured long ago.

A second nuclear test is by no means simply a propaganda ploy. Most experts believe that the 2006 test was flawed, producing an explosive yield well below even what the North's scientists had predicted. The scientific and military imperatives for a second test have been strong for over two years, and the potential data, experience and other advantages of further testing would be tremendous.

I found this kind of funny.

Obama vowed when he took office to extend a hand to troublesome countries "willing to unclench your fist" but so far he has had little success with North Korea or Iran, which have continued to advance their nuclear programs and showed little interest in renewed dialogue.

From Reuters .

This only serves to highlight the incredible naivety of Obama and his crew.  It's this naivety that's going to get us into serious hot water, as if we're not already in enough.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle
