Neb. boy, 6, takes wheel after dad passes out

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – A 6-year-old boy grabbed the wheel of his family's pickup truck when his father passed out from low blood sugar, keeping the vehicle from crashing until an officer could bring it to a halt, police said.

Nebraska always scores high in the Best Drivers category every year (as does Kansas) because we start them young.   :-)

Also, one of the good things about North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas is that there's room, plenty of room, for one to drive, without being hampered by a whole lot of other traffic.

There's inconveniences to living in a small place, but there's advantages too.

I suspect people living in blue states would almost kill for the chance to have 20 miles of open road, no other vehicles.

Cool!  My dad used to drive a big, old Suburban.  I used to have nightmares that I would be in that same situation.  Glad that kid handled it better than I might have at his age.

When I was six I use to steer while my sixteen year old sister put on her make-up and teased her hair in the rearview mirror.  Do you know the difference between a DU Little Goon and a six year old?  A six year olds can be useful.

I seriously believe that horrible drivers "are born" in large cities.  I read an article just a few days ago about the states with the best and the worst drivers, and I'm sure that the states with the most city-slickers had the worst drivers.

Out where there is room to learn to follow properly, pass properly, and handle a car at over 100 mph, drivers naturally perform better.  (Starting early doesn't hurt, either.  Most farm and small-town kids have at least steered vehicles while still very, very young.)

It's been my experience, madam, that the worst drivers are in Boston and Baltimore.

I dunno why that is; it must have something to do with those corrupt Republican party machines that run those cities.

I was appalled one time in Boston, to watch as fire trucks and ambulances tried to get their way through traffic, and all of these CLINTON/GORE-bumper-stickered drivers wouldn't let them through.

That should be a penal crime, to not give way to emergency and law-enforcement vehicles.  Like ten or twenty years in the slammer.

I was in Boston once, on a business trip.  When I got back to Nebraska, I told my boss that I was sure they sent us to places like that just to remind us how lucky we were to live in Nebraska.    He just laughed.

Where I now live, we get traffic from Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Wichita and Kansas City traveling through.  It's always a toss-up to pick the location of the worst drivers...Johnson county, Kansas has some real morons, but the Oklahoma plates are usually the worst.  Mr Smith and I each travel about 40 miles to work, and 40 miles home, mostly on 2-lane highway.  It is VERY common to watch some idiot try to pass on a curve or going up a hill, in a no-passing zone, with oncoming traffic.  About once a month, if not more often, one of us is forced onto the shoulder by someone trying this.

A couple weeks ago, a family from our former church was traveling a near-by 2 lane highway.  Someone tried to pass where there was too little room and caused an accident...the mother and 15-year-old son were killed, the daughter is still in the hospital.  The people in the car that was being passed all ended up in the hospital.  The idiot that caused the wreck got away.   :banghead:

I used to let my daughter steer when she was 3.  Parking lot only, but still....
