Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food in Global Warming: Scientists

CHICAGO - When it comes to global warming, hamburgers are the Hummers of food, scientists say.

A giant hamburger is assembled at a Virginia restaurant. (AFP photo)
Simply switching from steak to salad could cut as much carbon as leaving the car at home a couple days a week.

That's because beef is such an incredibly inefficient food to produce and cows release so much harmful methane into the atmosphere, said Nathan Pelletier of Dalhousie University in Canada.

Pelletier is one of a growing number of scientists studying the environmental costs of food from field to plate.

By looking at everything from how much grain a cow eats before it is ready for slaughter to the emissions released by manure, they are getting a clearer idea of the true costs of food.

The livestock sector is estimated to account for 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and beef is the biggest culprit.

I honor your courage.

Note right here. THIS is what liberals consider "courage". Telling isn't it.

it's funny how personal this issue is for people, especially when eating less meat is healthier.

Funny how liberals are happy to lobby to un-ban something like weed, but are happy to consider bans on MEAT.

8. I know- people just don't want to hear fact one about how bad meat eating is for us and the planet

I've been hamburger-free for longer than I can remember!

Good for you on not eating the Burger. Means more for me  :-)

9. Funny, isn't it? People will boycott Walmart, vandalize Hummers, bash the pharmcos

but ask them to cut back on meat--an industry as bad and as Republican, if not more so, than the others listed--and you get called names and punched in the virtual face.

You eco-freaks aren't paying attention or are deliberately being obtuse.  Now go get out your Google's and have a little bit of a look for the violent and disruptive shit your allies pull when it comes to stopping the production, distribution and trade of meat products.

Thundering ignorance that thinks it's timeless wisdom, there.  In my own region, raising cattle is about the only possible form of agriculture there is, which is also true but for different reasons in much of the Southwest and Northen tier mountain areas.  Here, it's too rocky and hilly to break ground with a plow here, other places it is too dry to use the land for anything but pastoral farming (alot less density of stock, of course), and others it's both.  Dropping cattle farming in these areas would just bankrupt a lot of farmers and cause a huge decrease in the food supply, it does not mean crops would replace cattle.

This is one of the things that bugs me most about the primitives and liberals in general.  If they believe in some unproven theory like Al Goron's global warming hoax, driving electric cars, and whatever other stupid things they believe in, they aren't happy to just change their own behavior.  Oh no, they think it's their right to insist everyone else change their behavior to fit their idiotic ideas.

I suspect this is the kind of thing that the LIV (Low Information Voter) would react to (finally!). Take their liberty?  No problem.  Take their Freedom of Speech? No problem. Take their money?  No problem.  Take their children?  No problem.  But TAKE THEIR FREAKING BIG MAC?  Dude, they will riot.

I used to want to open a bar called "Burgers and Beer."

Now I want to open one that is called "Burgers and BJs."

Thanks for the concept DUmmys.
