Ramos' & Compean's Sentences Commuted

Bush pardons 2 former border guards

By DEB RIECHMANN – 5 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — President George W. Bush has commuted the prison sentences of two former Border Patrol guards whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited debate about illegal immigration.

Bush's act of clemency on Monday for Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean was a victory for Democratic and Republican members of Congress and others who pleaded with the president to pardon the men or at least commute their sentences.

Ramos and Compean are each serving sentences of more than 10 years for shooting an unarmed illegal immigrant as he was fleeing an abandoned marijuana load in 2005, then trying to cover it up.

It was just on Fox News that Bush commuted Ramos' and Compean's sentences. While not a complete pardon, at least these two border patrol agents are getting out of prison.

It's a start, but Bush should have granted them pardons. hell, they never should have been charged in the first place.  :hammer:

I'm happy they get to go home. But they should have never been in prison in the first place.

It is more than anyone expected.

They won't ever want for work -- they will probably end up in a Conservative Think Tank. They are definitely the face of everything that is wrong with how we handle the illegal immigration issue.

They lose a few rights as convicted felons -- but over time those can be worn down.

Overall good news.

I agree with those upthread that it should have been a pardon, but a commuted sentence is better than nothing.

Excellent news.    GWB needs to pardon his admin and everyone involved in to WoT before he leaves office.   I hope he does so.

Wouldn't that be an admission of guilt?

No.   It will be a find-some-other-headline-for-your-dog-and-pony-show Nancy statement, and a nice parting  :bigbird:.  to Conyers and company.

That and it will cause Matthews and Olbermann to have strokes of rage on the air.   Ah, the fallout from this would be so sweet.

All of this would be reasons to do it.  I, for one, would pay money to see either Tweety or Olbermann stroke out.

bush ought to resign, right now, and let Dick Cheney be President for a few hours, then  we could really hear the moonbats howl.

Even though they did not follow proper procedure, but throwing them in prison for 10 years is too harsh. They would get a reprimand. They deserve a full and unconditional pardon.

He has only less that 24 hours to resign. That would really shake things up.

No, they did perform criminal acts. Hiding evidence, lying to a Federal LEO, and some other things. Their sentence was too harsh and they should have just been fired. Commutation was the morally correct thing to do.

I heard their families were really struggling financially.    I really believe Ramos and Compean's days ahead are going to be the best.   They're going to be on talk shows, book tours, etc...    They WILL be okay financially.

Anyway, this Bud is for you Ramos and Compean.    :cheersmate:

Bush Commutes Sentences of Border Agents
« Reply #23 on: January 19, 2009, 11:01:46 PM »
Quote
WASHINGTON – In his final acts of clemency, President George W. Bush on Monday commuted the prison sentences of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited fierce debate about illegal immigration.

Bush's decision to commute the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who tried to cover up the shooting, was welcomed by both Republican and Democratic members of Congress. They had long argued that the agents were merely doing their jobs, defending the American border against criminals. They also maintained that the more than 10-year prison sentences the pair was given were too harsh.
