I doubt Chesty was the first, nor Hannibal for that matter.  Unlike Chesty at Chosin, at Cannae Hannibal really DID have the seemingly-about-to-win Romans exactly where he wanted them.  A small hidden force jumped the Romans' ass from ambush as they advanced, and the battle quickly turned into a complete rout in favor of the Punic army and their allies.
