Even though a lot of date in our agencies might have been copied privately and stored employees are still vulnerable. They could be ordered to turn it over or be disciplined or fired. Worse yet they could have their residences raided by the FBI or Homeland Security. We are in a time now when anything can happen and it won't be good.

I am worried because not only could employees be threatened with prosecution and jail and firing, they could also be ordered to copy data turn it over and then erase the data from government computers. We are dealing with a very ruthless GOP and Trump taking orders from the likes of the Koch brothers.

What does this mean? I don't know. A lot of data saved? Raided by Homeland Security? What data? Ha Ha Ha

What in Hades is TMN blathering about? Does he really imagine the data is located in just one place? Hasn't been copied? Multiple times? That it's something that can be physically handed over to someone?

And if the idea of government data being (somehow magically) totally erased bothers him, where was TMN when The CHILL had her geekasoid life forms try to erase tens of thousands of emails that were government business?

No idea WTF he's on about, if it's on a government employee's work computer, of course the government has access to it, directly or indirectly.  Every government computer I've ever seen has an opening banner or terms-of-use agreement that makes it abundantly clear anything you put on it is accessible to the government and/or becomes government property.

I'm guessing, having never worked for any government, that the employment contract is long and specific about the care and feeding of government owned data. My guess being fired would be the least of concerns as time in Leavenworth would be a real possibility.

Yup.  My guess is that it would leave a big trail leading to the perp.  Not quite like a Ruskie hacking the internet  to get in to the DNC. .  The intra-net is a little more easy to track users on especially when you move large amounts of data to a 'personal directory' to download or email...

There actually isn't a contract as such with the Feds civil service, because all the terms of employment are specified by law, regulation, or the position description.

ETA - basically nothing is negotiable, you can accept or refuse the job offer, but a contract like for a private sector job doesn't really mean anything in civil service.
