Mexico threatens to cancel treaty that ceded Texas and California to US if Trump gets elected

Source: RawStory/The Telegraph

While Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump might have taken a victory lap after his meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, those south of the U.S. border are not.

Finance Minister Luis Videgaray resigned Wednesday, after backlash from the invitation to Trump to meet with Peña Nieto. Now, Mexican Senator Armando Rios Piter is proposing legislation that could put Mexico in conflict with the United States.

“It was a historic error for our president to invite a person like that to our country. Mr Trump used us as a campaign tool,” the senator told the Telegraph. In the past, Trump has threatened to cancel the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), claiming it was bad policy that hurt the U.S. manufacturing industry. If Trump were to do this, however, Piter’s bill would trigger a review and possible cancelation of all of the bilateral agreements between Mexico and the U.S.

The bill Piter is proposing would specifically cancel the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War and ceded Texas and California as well as parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming to the U.S. if Trump cancels NAFTA.

Mexico has national health insurance, although it's not yet universal. They'll also work to get all those semiauto pistols off the street since they've got strict gun control laws.

“We can’t take a partisan view of this,” says Sen. Piter. “All parties in the senate are in agreement that Mexico needs to stand up for itself and strengthen its relationship with the United States. We want to shut Trump’s mouth, which has been spewing this hateful speech.”

Well then, I guess all that would be left for them to do at that point is to come and take it.

Are DU-folk, Raw Story, and The Telegraph all so blindingly ignorant as to publish that?

1.) Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, finalized with the Treaties of Velasco.

2.) Texas became a state in the US in 1845.

3.) The Mexican-American War began in 1846 due to Mexico's Army's repeated incursions into Texas, i.e. US territory.

4.) The Mexican-American War was concluded in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

5.) The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo require the US to pay for the territory gained in silver or gold, and reimburse Mexican citizens for food, etc. taken during the war, and assume Mexican debts from the Texas War of Independence (which had been adjudicated by a neutral power, Britain), with interest if not paid immediately.

6.) The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo did not include Texas in that purchase, because Texas had been a US state for 2 or 3 years.

If a very ordinary person like me knows this - without ever having lived in Texas - it takes a lot of stupid for DU-folk, Raw Story, and The Telegraph (who at least has the very slight excuse of being on a different continent ... slight, because they could have learned it in 5 or 10 minutes from Wikipedia - which I didn't need, except to verify a couple of dates) all not to know at least some of the above! Obviously DU TDS is too strong for them to recognize a need to do minimal fact-checking.

The most capable ships in the Mexican Navy are modernized Gearing class DDs and Edsall class DEs, all built in the 1940s. IIRC, unless the DEs' engines have been replaced, the DE's aren't even capable of 20 knots.

IIRC in the war with Mexico the USA conquered ALL OF MEXICO. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gave Mexico back much of their land. I'm sure that 99% of Mexicans now wish that we would have kept the whole thing.

So year nullify the treaty and we can then take the rest of Mexico. I would then be able to own land on the beach. Something I can't do now.

I do so love the way the DUmbasses love proving they are DUmbasses It is like a badge of pride for them.

That being said, they are quite efficient at handling certain types of problems... areas where we could take lessons on rare occasion. One being how they deal with Somali sea pirates. I don't know how many remember the context, but various international human rights nut jobs were on their asses about how they were going to deal with a bunch of muslim pirates who jacked a Russian ship. It sounds like a couple of skeet shooters on the Lido Deck of the Love Boat could keep them at bay.

The Gearings were designed with Pacific service in mind. Relatively large, six 5"/38 dual-purpose guns, >34 knots, sonar & depth charges. Very capable ships.

WW2 DEs were designed to be cranked out in high volume, with a particular focus on convoy escort and hunting subs. Edsall had 3" guns, depth charges, and Hedgehog; 21 knots, fast enough to maneuver around in convoys and chase surfaced U-boats, I-boats, and RO-boats. DEs went into mothball very soon after WW2 ended and probably never emerged until they were scrapped (which was the case with Edsall).

Very capable ships.

Sure, if operated with reasonable skill and maintained with reasonable diligence; two things for which the Mexican military is not generally known.

The Gearings were basically 'Destroyer leaders,' to lead divisions or squadrons of Fletchers and their slightly smaller predecessor class, both of which were built in vast numbers.  The were built to replace an earlier class of destroyer leaders, the Sumner class, itself a big improvement over the previous class of destroyer leaders, which had topweight and 'Wet' front end issues due to having two superposed twin turrets forward, while in the Gearings the hull was lengthened amidships and the middle turret was moved from bow- to stern-firing position, superposed over the rear turret, at a somewhat lower level, and moving the center of gravity a bit lower and aft (Or the center of buoyancy forward, whichever).  If you were going to just have a couple of destroyers, Gearings would certainly be 'Superdestroyers' by WW2 standards.

The Edsall class DEs differed from the destroyers in more ways than their size and total armament, they were Diesel rather  than geared steam turbine ships, and on a perfect day with a following wind topped out at between 24 and 27 knots tops, vs. about 33 for a Fletcher or Gearing.  Basically not the platform for a surface engagement with anything but a surfaced sub or a tub trying to sneak a load of contraband in past the revenue launch. Interestingly, Wiki notes only one Edsall being transferred to Mexico, but the later Rudderow class (With a steam turbine - electric drive, two single 5"/38 standard single turret mounts, and rated at 24 knots but most of the ships tagged 27 at some point, for which there is a much sketchier Wiki entry) shows that one or more were also transferred to Mexico.  The Navy seems to have had a weird fascination with trying to power ships with electricity, starting with the battleship New Mexico in 1915, which just seems like a bad idea for a ship that is going to be shot at, torpedoed, or bombed while sitting in salt water.
