Mexico threatens to cancel treaty that ceded Texas and California to US if Trump gets elected
Source: RawStory/The Telegraph
...
The bill Piter is proposing would specifically cancel the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War and ceded Texas and California as well as parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming to the U.S. if Trump cancels NAFTA.
Are DU-folk, Raw Story, and The Telegraph all so blindingly ignorant as to publish that?
1.) Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, finalized with the
Treaties of Velasco.
2.) Texas became a state in the US in 1845.
3.) The Mexican-American War began in 1846 due to Mexico's Army's repeated incursions into Texas, i.e. US territory.
4.) The Mexican-American War was concluded in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
5.) The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo require the US to pay for the territory gained in silver or gold, and reimburse Mexican citizens for food, etc. taken during the war, and assume Mexican debts from the Texas War of Independence (which had been adjudicated by a neutral power, Britain), with interest if not paid immediately.
6.) The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo did not include Texas in that purchase, because Texas had been a US state for 2 or 3 years.
If a very ordinary person like me knows this - without ever having lived in Texas - it takes a lot of stupid for DU-folk, Raw Story, and The Telegraph (who at least has the very slight excuse of being on a different continent ... slight, because they could have learned it in 5 or 10 minutes from Wikipedia - which I didn't need, except to verify a couple of dates) all not to know at least some of the above! Obviously DU TDS is too strong for them to recognize a need to do minimal fact-checking.
