Guys, am I being that unreasonable?
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:56:25 AM »
My husband has a major game/car fetish.. I let him indulge to his hearts desire and right now it is backfiring on me.

He has a full size arcade, in our living room. Our beautiful deco living room, and its really just butt ugly  :-) But the guys around here love it and they play it a lot. So, I dont want to take it away from the main play area, but I offered to recover it in some funky fabric and he said "NO."

I think HE is being unreasonable ... its a nice compromise to my mind.

This is my dream home and I love the view from the kitchen to the family room (its all one big open space) and that arcade just ruins it for me. He knows this, and he agrees... but he wont budge on changing the facade of the six foot 4 hulking machine next to our floor to ceiling river rock fire place.

He said I'm being snotty...   :banghead:

He's right.  It's his house too.

build an addition, preferably not attached, and behind the house so it can't be seen from the street.  make him pay for it out of his car and arcade game allowance, but give him an "anything goes" assurance in the new space.

he will have a testosterone induced rush from the lust to build stuff, as well as the "anything goes" possibility.  I don't even know the guy, and I bet this has a better than even chance of passing. :-)

Id have to see photos to make a judgment on whether or not you are being unreasonable.  You maybe making a BMX Mountain Bike game out of a Whack-a-Molehill.

well, i wish we had room for something like that. but we dont. our house is almost as big as the lot. we didnt want to mess with a yard much, and its perfect in that way. But there is no room to build out here.

so, you thinking covering it with some fabric or wallpaper is out of the question?

those are amazing! i wish we had space for that. we have a pretty big home, but we also have three kids living here right now who take up a lot of space.

mamacags, we dont have basements or attics here and the garage is about to get a big treatment (Premiere Garage is doing a floor and cabinets for him) so, he will have that.

i just want .. oh i dunno, a big furry 70ish type thing adhered to the walls. So I dont have to have look at Nindtendo game titles .. ick..

the huge machine next to the river rock fireplace seems unreasonable to me, and I'm a guy.  he should compromise on that one.

be sure and tell him that all of your friends that live in the internets say he is being stubborn.  I am sure that will change his mind. :-)

im really not.. i'll send you a pm with a link to what it looks like. its big. just like at an arcade, the full size.

three guys can easily stand around it and play.. maybe four if one of them is taller.

the room would be so much nicer without the game, but its a fun thing for the boys (young and old) and i certainly dont want to take it away. ive never even threatened to do that.

i'm just trying to get a compromise...

ha! it might! i just need some ammo..  :-)

i actually like having the machine in there; the guys like not having to listen to the chicks talk about wedding stuff, whatnot.. so they can wander over and play and just disconnect. and jeff loves it .. i just wish it looked cooler.

ok, i'm going to go hunt for a picture of it..

Hey, from the build-up I expected to see five or six machines (Asteroids, Galaga, Space Invaders, etc.), a movie popcorn popper, and a refrigerated keg!

Put a tall plant beside it, some retro toys on the mantle and on top of the bookcase, a framed Battlestar Gallactica poster over the fireplace, and tasteful bead drapes on the big window.   Make it blend in.

Do you have a living room and a family room? Formal dining room?

If you have either the LR or the DR, what about turning one into an arcade? Get a tv that mounts on the wall, build a corner bar, get some bar stools, put one of those little frig's behind it filled with beer.

Then you'd have the family room looking the way you want and he and his buds and the kids would still be close by.

And you don't have to stand in the kitchen and see it... :-)

Look at it like a scrapbooking project...there are some nice papers for just such a project, fibers, glitter, etc.  It can be both an heirloom and an arcade game.

Yeah, I wouldn't want that in my living room, either.  A gameroom, or basement or mancave or office or something, sure, but not in my living room.

we do have another room upstairs that is a media room, but there is no room for the arcade upstairs.

we had it in the garage for a while, til it got cold and rainy and he said it was too chilly to stand out there and play.

AWESOME! Ask him if it has Joust on it.

Oh, BTW, how many rooms in the home do you consider yours  and have treated as such?  :fuelfire:

it does have Joust, yep.

and as for how many rooms? hmm... well, i have more masculine taste and dont do frill or loud colors. the media room is all his. i guess i got to make the master bedroom all mine, but its cool blues and chocolate browns and creams. nothing girly at all.

the entire house is cream colored walls except for his study and the dining room.. those are espresso colored.

after the garage is finished, he actually has more 'guy' rooms than i do.
