Re opium dens - neither created in (opium poppies are native to Asia) nor peculiar to California. The Brits fought two wars to beable to keep importing opium into China. And of course there's the more or less autobiographical book, Confessions of an English Opium Eater.

There's plenteous valid reasons for sneering at California and Lib/Prog Californians without making stuff up.

Oh, I dunno.

Even a novice looking at a body laying in a trash-strewn apartment with hypodermic needles scattered all around, needle marks and scars on the body, and no contradicting evidence of some sort of foul play, could figure out what killed a primitive.

I dunno.  If the body has a "feel the bern" or "Klintoon--->" button, that is probably classified as "natural causes."

Not making it up, all the Chinese imports brought their opium with them, a big population living in california.

My point was simpler, that opium dens were neither originated in nor unique to CA, i.e., not an example of CA weirdness. If opium addiction came to CA with the Chinese, alcoholism (as we call it now) came to CA from the US and EuroLand. For CA weirdness, try, e.g., this bit of lunacy.

There was, indeed, a significant wave of immigration from China to CA toward the end of the Gold Rush - the reason for which they came - and many of the workers on the western portion, the Central Pacific, of the Transcontinental Railroad were Chinese. A few of my classmates in high school were probably descendants of that immigration wave (and others may have been descendants of Spanish-Mexican settlers who were in CA before it became US territory).

I watched a documentary on Fentanyl (sp?). They interviewed heroin makers/smugglers in S. America. Those guys paid a Chinese scientist $50K to learn how to make Fentanyl. They said that addicts won't buy heroin now without Fentanyl added. I fully believe it's not the heroin so much as what it's laced with that is causing so many to OD. There was a young boy in his 20s that died here. They found a fentanyl patch beside him. He had eaten the patch (Yuk) and OD'd. Sad & tragic.
